An attorney for 24-year-old Hollywood chef Ryan Simas urged a Ventura County judge Thursday to acquit his client of murder charges, saying prosecutors have failed to prove Simas played any role in the 1993 slaying of a Ventura High School student. But prosecutors argued that while Simas was not the actual killer, he should still be found guilty of murder for participating in a street fight that led to the slaying of 17-year-old Jesse Strobel.

WASHINGTON -- If Jesse Ventura was the body, Dean Barkley was the brains. A lawyer who once took out a $30,000 second mortgage on his house to pay his campaign bills, Barkley was the maverick candidate who ran over and over again to put a third party on Minnesota's political map. In the 1994 Senate race, he got more than 5% of the vote, giving what is now the Independence Party a claim on public financing.

I was in San Francisco on election day and the fine Democrats I met could sense Arnoldism on the march and said they felt embarrassed by it all and I had to reassure them: A recall election is a beautiful thing. Chaos? What chaos? The voters got a chance to fast-forward to 2006 and click on Arnold. Why wait three years if you can cut to the chase? Government can be such a dreary, drawn-out business, and an election is swift and dramatic.

Buena High wrestling coach Wayne Thomas, despite a 2-17-1 record in dual meets, has at least one reason to be excited this season. The Bulldogs have one of the region's top performers in senior Thien Tran. Tran (20-0 with 17 pins at 119 pounds) was the only local champion in last weekend's Rio Mesa tournament, which featured strong programs from Idaho, Arizona and Oregon. He also won the Camarillo dual tournament. "I knew he could win, but now he knows he can win," Thomas said.

A 21-year-old Santa Paula man charged with murder in the 1993 stabbing death of Ventura teen Jesse Strobel is considering a plea change, his lawyers said Friday. Jose "Pepe" Castillo has denied killing the 17-year-old Ventura High School student and a trial date is set for Aug. 27. But Castillo may admit to the killing at an Aug. 16 pretrial hearing in Juvenile Court, which his attorneys say would allow them to focus on a more serious set of murder charges in adult court.
