A Colorado Internet services company said Thursday that it has consolidated 30 local and regional affiliates nationwide, including two Orange County operations that it melded into one and now calls Verio Southern California. Verio Inc. said the consolidations are aimed at improving the company's presence in each of the 33 U.S. markets it serves.

Verio Southern California in Irvine will begin offering high-speed Internet service to small- and medium-size businesses in Los Angeles this week, and plans to roll out the service in Orange County in July. The Internet company, which is working with NorthPoint Communications Inc. of Irvine, will sell customers variations of digital subscriber line--or DSL--service.

Pacific Bell's new high-speed Internet service will probably be available in Los Angeles and surrounding areas in July or August, but business customers won't have to wait that long. Beginning today, NorthPoint Communications Inc. of Irvine will make similar high-speed network access available in the San Fernando Valley and in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties through five Internet service providers.

Neal R. Aton has been named president of Avco Insurance Services, the insurance subsidiary of Avco Financial Services Inc. in Costa Mesa. He joined the company in 1988 as vice president of marketing. Aton assumed responsibility for AFS' U.S. insurance programs operation in 1990 and in 1994 added responsibility for its international insurance programs. He was appointed senior vice president of AFS Programs in 1995. Before joining Avco, Aton worked at E.F. Hutton & Co.
