In the years after his release from prison, Raymond Chow insisted he had gone straight and tried to prove it by posting photos with celebrities and endorsements from politicians across his Facebook profile. The profile shows the organized crime figure known as “Shrimp Boy” rubbing shoulders with the likes of former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom , NFL football player Vernon Davis and Randy Jackson of the Jackson Five. But even by Chow's standards for mingling with the famous and powerful, the summer of 2012 was a good one for Shrimp Boy. According to posts he wrote on his Facebook timeline, he gave multiple speeches in June, including one to a middle school he hoped would “help the kids stay positive and out of trouble.” In July, Chow was honored as a “Change Agent” at an annual “In the Trenches” awards ceremony in San Francisco.

The San Francisco 49ers are looking for a little digital magic to lure fans to the new Levi's Stadium, which opens next year in Santa Clara. After all, the team ranked 12th in attendance -- out of 32 teams -- in 2012, in a year when one of the NFL's most exciting quarterbacks, Colin Kaepernick, took the 49ers to the Super Bowl. (We will not revisit the pain of the loss to the Baltimore Ravens).  The Niners trailed football-crazy Dallas, both New York teams, Washington Redskins, Denver and a host of others when it comes to putting fans in seats last year, according to the NFL's attendance figures.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In his second season as a starter, Colin Kaepernick improved to 3-0 in road playoff games, but it will take a successful journey to the most hostile environment in the NFL for the 49ers to repeat as NFC champions. The 49ers toppled the host Carolina Panthers, 23-10, Sunday, taking over the game on two Kaepernick touchdowns, one a throw and one a run, sandwiched around halftime. San Francisco advanced to the NFC championship game Sunday in Seattle, where the 49ers have been blown out the last two seasons.

San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh and Carolina's Ron Rivera, teammates with the Chicago Bears in the 1980s, square off with very similar teams. Both have stifling defenses, productive power running games, and mobile, dynamic quarterbacks who can pick up first downs with their feet. Whereas Colin Kaepernick helped bring the 49ers to the brink of a Lombardi Trophy last season, Cam Newton will make his first postseason appearance for the Panthers. Carolina stunned San Francisco in November with a 10-9 victory at Candlestick Park, but the 49ers were without Kaepernick's favorite target, receiver Michael Crabtree, who missed 11 games because of a torn Achilles' tendon.

ATLANTA - Moments after scoring his second touchdown in Sunday's NFC championship game, Frank Gore stood in the back of the end zone, turned to face the deflated Georgia Dome crowd and began the first few steps of the "Dirty Bird," the celebration dance popularized by the hometown Falcons in the late 1990s. Then, in a move he'd practiced many times, Gore stopped and gave the crowd a dismissive wave, as if to say, "Never mind. " "I thought about that all week," Gore said after San Francisco's 28-24 victory, one that sends the 49ers to their first Super Bowl since the 1994 season.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Phil Dawson will turn 39 years old later this month. He's at the tail end of his 15th season. And after spending 14 years in Cleveland with the Browns, the San Francisco 49ers kicker isn't exactly accustomed to the postseason stage. So on Sunday, when his big moment arrived, he made sure to appreciate the opportunity more than fear the pressure. Three seconds remained. A 33-yard field-goal attempt awaited to break a 20-20 tie and beat the Green Bay Packers in the opening round of the playoffs.

Barely two months ago, Alex Smith stood alone under center as the NFL's hottest starting quarterback for one of its best teams. One concussion later, he is lost in the crowd. At the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl media day this week, the hardest thing about talking to Smith was finding Smith. While the team's stars spoke on stages set up on the Superdome field, Smith had no assigned spot and thus wandered through the media hordes on the sidelines, nearly invisible and seemingly irrelevant.

So much for silver platters. A couple of first-place NFL teams saw prime opportunities go poof Sunday, as they failed to make the most of their comeback chances. The Chicago Bears, who were in a three-way tie for first in the NFC North, scored on a touchdown pass against Detroit with 40 seconds left and were a two-point conversion away from tying. The Bears got two chances at the conversion - the second coming because of a roughing-the-passer call - and came up short.

The AFC has the Lombardi Trophy. The NFC has everything else. That is, the NFC boasts last season's most valuable player, Minnesota's Adrian Peterson; offensive rookie of the year, Washington's Robert Griffin III; defensive rookie of the year, Carolina's Luke Kuechly; and the majority of the league's best teams. There are always surprise teams in the NFL. Who could have predicted that Indianapolis would go from 2-14 to reaching the playoffs with a rookie coach and quarterback at the helm?

As one of the leading tight ends in the National Football League, the San Francisco 49ers' Vernon Davis will be one to watch during Sunday's Super Bowl game against the Baltimore Ravens. Last month, the 28-year-old Davis added another responsibility to his resume: art gallery owner. The football player opened a space called Gallery 85 in San Jose. The gallery is expected to show art by Davis as well as emerging artists. The gallery's opening in December served as a fundraiser for the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, which helps fund arts education and art appreciation for at-risk youth.
