Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, embroiled in a battle over remarks he made about Dr. Robert Atkins, offered the diet guru's widow a low-carb mea culpa -- an invitation to a steak dinner. A spokesman for Veronica Atkins said the invitation had been accepted. Mayoral spokesman Ed Skyler issued a three-sentence statement about the food fight. The widow of Dr. Robert Atkins went on national television Friday to demand that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg apologize for calling the late diet guru "fat." Veronica Atkins told ABC's "Good Morning America" she was "sick and tired" of her husband "being always maligned and his life's work being trivialized." The mayor apparently thought he was off-camera when he made the comment while eating pasta at a firehouse earlier this week.

OPINION
July 24, 2008
Re "Low-fat diet not tops for weight loss," July 17 As a dietitian, I'm concerned that the public is once again being misled about the safety and effectiveness of the Atkins diet. The recent weight-loss study, which was funded in part by the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation, compared a low-carbohydrate diet to a low-fat diet containing 30% of calories from fat. But a truly low-fat diet would contain less than 10% of calories from fat. Study participants on the so-called low-fat diet reduced their total fat intake by only 1.4% -- hardly enough to make a difference.
