It may seem too good to be true, but Versace is launching an apparel line at fast-fashion retailer H&M in November. Missoni suede heels, with the luxe Italian fashion house's signature zigzag print, hit the shelves at discount giant Target. Even Vera Wang is designing diamond engagement rings for budget jeweler Zales. Unlikely pairings, perhaps, but shoppers are seeing more of these bargain-luxury combos these days as elite fashion designers increasingly go mass market. At a time when signals of economic distress abound, consumers are responding to the partnerships, turning the hype into huge sales.

[People] Thigh-gap controversy alert: A photo on Beyonce's Instagram showing the star golfing in a bathing suit is drawing allegations from commenters that her thighs were digitally altered to look thinner. By the time the spring-summer 2010 men's Fashion Week in Milan wrapped up Tuesday, the runway had showcased enough old-school macho archetypes to form its own (infinitely more stylish) version of the Village People. While several designers riffed generally on the concept of the nomad and the loner, others were more specific.

Running the two-page Versace ad in the magazine's spring fashion issue (Feb. 25) was a terrible decision. The ad is hideous, irresponsible and, frankly, comes off as dated. The majority of high-end designers have discarded the posturing of "heroin chic" advertising. I've talked to several people and, so far, the ad has managed to offend almost all of them. What were you thinking? Maria Goulding Temple City I was shocked and disgusted. Shame on you for accepting the Versace advertisement.

Beyonce has changed her hairstyle twice in the last couple of weeks, cutting her long locks into a pixie cut, then showing up at a lunch with her hair (more likely extensions) longer in front. Word went around that she was having regrets about the shorter style. Which left us wondering what style hair (or wig) she'd wear on stage? The question was answered when she performed at the V Festival in Chelmsford, England on Saturday in a below-the-chin sleek blond bob. Found on ancient mosaics, Hollywood Regency rugs and a host of Versace housewares, the Greek key design signifies classic deep-pockets taste. Yet this made-in-China porcelain set, available in black or beige with gold details, costs a mere $16.96 for each five-piece setting. Do the math: Bargain dishes plus confident presentation equal a luxe look for less. You'll find the pieces, along with coordinating goblets, at Bargain Fair, the discount restaurant and catering supplier at 7901 Beverly Blvd.

The scene: Interest in this up-and-coming talent is high, especially now that Vaccarello is rumored to be in the running to take the top spot at Versace's secondary line, Versus, following J.W. Bad news for UPN. Always a player in the scrappy world of prime-time programming, the independent network had been hoping for big things from its newest reality show, "Chains of Love." That's the one in which ordinary singles are handcuffed to members of the opposite sex, then monitored for titillating developments in their relationship dynamic. But Monday's Nielsen ratings brought the sobering truth: The show is ranked 153 out of 164, with a paltry viewership of 2.5 million people per week.

Cheap is becoming chic in a different way. British pop star M.I.A.'s upcoming capsule collection for Versus Versace brings street style's current love of twisting designer logos and prints to a high fashion brand. For this 19-piece collection, which hits stores Oct. 16, M.I.A. created prints inspired by bootleg Versace merchandise she found in London markets as a teenager. Gold medallions galore, and versions of famous Versace emblems such as the Medusa head and interlocking Greek key, are blown up and spliced together on T-shirts, printed jeans, silk shirts, jersey dresses and military-inspired outerwear for Versace's lower-price brand with a rotating cast of designers.

CANNES, France--It was going to be a tough call. In a post-Sept. 11 world, how was this year's Cannes Film Festival--with a reduced Hollywood studio presence and more serious art-house fare--going to top last year's colorful fanfare and fantasy of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Moulin Rouge," spiced by the frisson of Nicole Kidman's divorce? Woody Allen's opening film, "Hollywood Ending," certainly wasn't going to do the job--nor nor was the director.

It is incongruous to me that Andrew Cunanan was able to get as far as he did before everyone awakened to the fact that this man was on a murder spree. This man murdered four people in three states and was traveling in very conspicuous stolen vehicles--a Lexus and a red pickup truck. Apparently, nobody was looking very hard until Gianni Versace became a victim. As I watch and read the coverage of this most recent murder several things come to mind: Were the lives of the other four people who were murdered of such little value that they did not deserve the attention?

Mena Suvari attended her first European fashion show on Sunday and was impressed. “I was sad when the show was over,” the "American Beauty" star said at the after-party, still marveling at Donatella Versace's presentation for Atelier Versace, which launched the fall-winter 2013-2014 haute couture season.  “She set the bar high.” And that Versace did, even more so than usual with a stunning-at-43 Naomi Campbell leading off the catwalk...
