Like art, music and fashion, roller coasters speed through trends in a never-ending pursuit of the latest and greatest record-setting feat. Over the years, theme parks have introduced all sorts of "world's first" coaster designs billed as the fastest, tallest or longest -- only to be overtaken in subsequent summers by faster, taller and longer behemoths. Photos: Banshee inverted coaster at Ohio's Kings Island So it comes as somewhat of a surprise that Ohio's Kings Island will introduce the world's longest inverted coaster in April with an under-the-track design that last reigned supreme in the 1990s.

What can you do on your feet, upside down, at 65 mph? Ride the Riddler's Revenge, the answer for thrill-seekers who wondered what Magic Mountain would do to top last summer's Superman ride. Executives of the amusement park near Valencia say that although Riddler's Revenge won't match the speed of the Superman ride--at 100 mph the world's fastest roller coaster--it will be the world's fastest roller coaster in which passengers stand up instead of sit down.

For years, Hot Wheels toy track sets have appeared somewhat impractical for real-life applications. All the twists, the turns, the loops. Surely, no full-size car could do what those toy cars on those tracks could. Tanner Faust and Greg Tracy will have a chance to disprove that theory Saturday. The two drivers will attempt to break a world record by driving a car through a six-story vertical loop in what is expected to be one of the big events at the X Games this weekend. The Double Loop Dare, a life-sized spinoff of Hot Wheels' Double Dare Snare set made by Mattel, features a bright orange track with two 60-foot vertical loops.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is expected to add a terrain hugging launched roller coaster in 2013 featuring the world's tallest loop, according to an employee who wasn't authorized to speak on behalf of the amusement park. A Magic Mountain mechanic inadvertently revealed closely guarded facts about the record-setting 2013 attraction while casually talking with a group of coaster enthusiasts during the recent West Coast Bash event at the Valencia amusement park. Details of the conversation quickly appeared on the Theme Park Review website and rapidly spread through the online coaster community.

Far from being the "ferocious cat" it's been dubbed, Knott's Berry Farm's new Jaguar! roller coaster more closely resembles a feisty house cat than the feral cousin it was named for. By cutting-edge standards, the 2,700-foot steel-railed coaster is more purr than howl. Hard-core thrill freaks will no doubt find the Boomerang and Montezooma's Revenge coasters more to their liking. Lacking barrel roles, vertical loops, free falls and other similar devices, Jaguar!

At the outset, at least, the El Toro Air Show last weekend provided traditional thrills and good entertainment, as it has for more than four decades. Sadly, on Sunday afternoon, as has happened three times in the last eight years, a plane crashed. The daring pilot of a Korean War-era jet fighter was killed when he could not pull out of a vertical loop.
