Vicki Toutz, the badminton coach at Garden Grove High School, said Wednesday she has been appointed coach of the U.S. Olympic badminton team for the 1992 Games in Barcelona. "This is by far the highlight of my entire athletic career," Toutz said. Toutz, 52, has coached at Garden Grove for 31 years. She was the national seniors women's doubles champion from 1982-84 and the seniors mixed doubles champion from 1983-85. In 1971 and 1981, Toutz represented the U.S.

When Vicki Toutz was named to coach the U.S. Olympic badminton team in Barcelona, she saw it not only as a major opportunity but also a chance to change the image of the sport. Toutz, who has been coaching at Garden Grove High School since 1961, received word of her appointment to the U.S. team May 1 from the U.S. Badminton Assn. Badminton will be a medal sport for the first time in Barcelona, and Toutz will be in charge of the U.S. six-person contingent. "It's getting exciting," Toutz said.

For the past two weeks, Tracy Hudson of Garden Grove High School has been in a state of recovery. The three-time Southern Section girls' singles badminton champion is still getting over her first loss of the season, an 11-5, 4-11, 11-8 upset by Colton's Denise Gudmundson in the Southern Section team semifinals. Hudson finished the season 38-1. "It's knocked me out of my senses," Hudson said. "At first I was angry, and then I wondered if it was all worth it."

Garden Grove's Tam Nguyen couldn't have mapped out a better year for himself in high school badminton. Only in his wildest dreams could he have imagined that he would win, not only the Southern Section boys' singles title, but the Division I team title, as well. And that is why for the second consecutive year, Nguyen has been named The Times Orange County Player of the Year. "It has been a perfect year," Nguyen said. "It's 1999, the millennium, the last year before the end of the century.

He rallied to defeat section individual finalist Xiao Hong, 7-15, 15-7, 15-10. * CYNTHIA TRAN Girls' Singles Garden Grove, Jr. Tran finished with a 58-2 record and her only losses were to Alhambra's Stella Ng. Tran helped the Argonauts reach the Southern Section Division I finals.

Canh Nguyen led Garden Grove High School to the CIF Southern Section 4-A badminton championship as the No. 1 seed Argonauts defeated Nogales, 13-6 Thursday at Huntington Beach High School. After losing the first set to Amani Purcell in boys' singles, Nguyen took a three-set victory, 8-15, 15-12, 15-13.
