NFL stars Victor Cruz and Roddy White are no different than many other Americans who were outraged at the verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial this weekend. The difference, though, is that Cruz and White are NFL receivers who have Twitter feeds with hundreds of thousands of followers each. Both men tweeted rather extreme reactions Saturday night after Zimmerman was found not guilty in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Each of them have since apologized for their tweets.

A Santa Monica jury has awarded a female news producer $5.42 million after finding that a West Hollywood nightclub was negligent in the sexual assault on her in a club restroom. The 43-year-old woman sued the Here Lounge and club worker Victor Cruz, saying that she was assaulted and raped by him March 23, 2009. The Times is not identifying her because she is a victim of a sex crime. After a 15-day trial in Santa Monica Superior Court, jurors found that Cruz committed a sexual offense that harmed the woman and that Here Lounge's negligence was a substantial factor in causing that harm.

Sports news is usually filled with athletes doing stupid things. Maybe it's about time it gets filled with athletes doing wonderful things. In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz discovered that he was the favorite player of one of the victims, Jack Pinto. For Sunday's game against Atlanta, Cruz wrote Pinto's name on his shoes in tribute to the 6-year-old. "It's humbling," he said. "I was honored to know I was his favorite player. It's just unreal what happened.

New York Giants star receiver Victor Cruz signed a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season. Cruz was a restricted free agent with three years in the NFL. Last month, he signed a one-year, $2.879-million tender with the Giants, but a long-term deal was already in the works. The Giants could have matched any offers Cruz received from other teams - so he didn't get any. The new deal is worth $43 million, according to media reports. --- The NFL and former players must try to negotiate a dispute over whether complaints about concussion-related injuries belong in court or in arbitration, a federal judge said.

Reporting from New York -- They stood so close there was barely room to breathe, their cellphone cameras raised and at the ready. Hundreds of New York Giants fans crammed into a Times Square sporting goods store last week, some waiting for three hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of the city's newest Super Bowl-bound sensation. Some fans wore crisp Victor Cruz jerseys, while others sported newly minted T-shirts reading "Cruuuuuuuz" on the front - the Giants cheer that sounds like booing - with a diagram of salsa steps on the back, the star receiver's touchdown celebration of choice.

Aaron Rodgers looked fine on the practice field Thursday. It doesn't mean he is going to play. There was no definitive word on whether Rodgers would be medically cleared to return from his left collarbone injury in time for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was just another day in the guessing game called "When Will the Franchise Quarterback Return" for the Packers. Coach Mike McCarthy indicated he would name his starter Friday. Rodgers also made several references to his playing status being an "organizational decision.

Reporting from East Rutherford, N.J. — What the New York Giants' offense must do to be successful against the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl (Feb. 5, 3:30 p.m. PST , Channel 4): Eli Manning threw 58 passes in the wind and rain Sunday at San Francisco. There's no reason to think the Giants quarterback will back off that approach against New England, especially in the climate-controlled confines of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. "We had some decent runs," Manning said of the win over the 49ers, "but we didn't think that was the approach to beat them.

Reporting from Indianapolis -- You're wrong. I know what you're thinking, what most of America is thinking, and you're wrong. You're thinking the New York Giants are going to win the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots on Sunday, and you're thinking it might not even be close. After watching the Giants roll through the playoffs by putting a "discount double check" on Aaron Rodgers and a postgame head slap on Jim Harbaugh, you feel it in your gut. After watching the Hoodie slowly wrinkle and Gisele's husband slowly wilt, you know it in your soul.

The Dallas Cowboys might call themselves "America's Team," but the Green Bay Packers are the NFL franchise deserving of that title. So says Public Policy Polling, which recently determined that twice as many fans in the nation chose the Packers as their favorite team, from a list of nine. The group surveyed 700 American voters from Dec. 16-18, and 22% of those polled said the Packers are their favorite team; followed by 11% for the Cowboys; 8% each for the Chicago Bears, New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers; 7% for the New Orleans Saints; 6% for the New England Patriots; 4% for the Washington Redskins; and 2% for the New York Jets.

Reporting from Indianapolis -- Good news for the New England Patriots: Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski practiced Thursday for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain Jan. 22 in the third quarter of a 23-20 victory over Baltimore in the AFC championship game. "He did some things. He didn't do everything," Patriots Coach Bill Belichick told pool reporter Alex Marvez . "We'll see how he is tomorrow. I think that will be the big key — how he responds to this today.
