He did not dazzle. Nor did he cause jaws to drop, heads to shake, or batters to mumble to themselves. Kenley Jansen appeared rather mortal in the Dodgers' last two games against the Detroit Tigers. Like a guy who could be had, particularly if you happen to be Detroit's Victor Martinez. Jansen blew a save Tuesday in a game the Dodgers came back to win in extra innings, and he was the losing pitcher Wednesday. Both times he succumbed to the bat of the 35-year-old Martinez. Jansen gave up a 10th-inning solo home run to Martinez on Wednesday to take the loss.

It was only the 10th game of the season for the Dodgers but mark it down as the early leader for their strangest. And, maybe, the most disappointing. A steal of home, a suicide squeeze by a pitcher, three errors by the Dodgers, a dramatic three-run bottom-of-the-ninth rally to tie it -- all for their closer to immediately give up the game in the 10th inning. More than four hours after it began, the Dodgers suffered a tough 7-6 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday before a Dodger Stadium crowd of 42,687 when Victor Martinez opened the 10th with a solo home run off closer Kenley Jansen.

Josh Beckett was not great. The Dodgers do not need him to be, and that makes for a pretty great situation for the home team. Think about it. What other team could afford to employ a guy making close to $16 million as a fifth starter, with no shortage of experienced understudies behind him? In his first major league start in 11 months, Beckett lasted four innings, gave up five runs and got no decision in the Dodgers' 7-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in 10 innings. He was long gone by the time Victor Martinez roughed up Kenley Jansen again.

Victor Martinez looked out toward where the audience was supposed to be in an auditorium at a recent book reading. Amid a sea of empty seats, he counted six faces--three friends and three people who worked there. He stayed up until 4 a.m. afterward, just sitting on a hard futon in the small apartment he shares with his wife in the Mission District here, brooding over 20 years of work and sacrifice and the just-published novel that seemed destined to bring him only more obscurity and struggle.

Jason Bay hit a two-run home run, David Ortiz and Victor Martinez added solo shots and the Boston Red Sox beat Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-1, Wednesday night. "We've been swinging good and when you're swinging good, that's what happens," said Ortiz, who has hit a home run in three consecutive games. Boston, which moved one game in front of Texas in the American League wild-card race, has hit at least two home runs in five games in a row. Bay, who has hit a home run in seven of his last 11 games, hit a two-run drive to left field in the fifth inning, his team-high 27th, to make it 5-1. -- associated press

Reporting From Detroit — This is a resilient bunch, Jim Leyland said after injuries robbed his team of outfielders Delmon Young and Magglio Ordonez, and the Detroit manager wasn't just talking about his banged-up Tigers, who nearly lost designated hitter Victor Martinez on Tuesday night. Texas center fielder Josh Hamilton's bat flew into the seats behind the first base dugout in Comerica Park in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, hitting a fan in a Tigers jersey in the back of the head in the sixth inning.

When Rosalie Martinez first laid eyes on serial killer Oscar Ray Bolin Jr., he had been brought from Florida's death row to a small holding cell in the county jail here to await the first of his three retrials. Convicted of the brutal rapes and murders 10 years ago of three young women, 35-year-old Bolin is considered by authorities to be a dangerous psychopath, a smooth-talking con man and an escape risk who has made direct threats on the lives of police.

You can now officially refer to Angels outfielder Torii Hunter as former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter. A person with knowledge of the negotiations says free agent outfielder Hunter has agreed to a two-year deal with the Detroit Tigers. The person, who spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made, says the deal is pending a physical. So, it looks like the Angels outfield next season will consist of Mark Trumbo, Mike Trout and Peter Bourjos, unless Vernon Wells suddenly becomes a good player again.

KEY MOMENT: Yasiel Puig had not played since spraining a thumb on a headfirst dive Saturday. But, as the Dodgers loaded the bases with none out in the ninth inning, there was Puig, headed to the on-deck circle and then the plate, as Dodger Stadium went nuts. Puig struck out looking, but the Dodgers scored three runs off Detroit closer Joe Nathan to force extra innings. AT THE PLATE: Carl Crawford had a pair of doubles, Juan Uribe had three singles, and Dee Gordon had two singles.

Detroit completed a four-game sweep of Cleveland on Thursday night, turning a three-game lead in what for months was a tight American League Central race into a seven-game bulge, when the message came across Twitter. "Congratulations to the Tigers, who just won the AL Central after sweeping the Indians," wrote Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Detroit Manager Jim Leyland didn't get the memo. "I know better than that, I'm not a fool," Leyland said. "There's a lot of baseball left.

If a tree falling in a forest doesn't make a sound, then the streaking Cleveland Indians in an empty ballpark must be just as insignificant. With nearly 45 games complete, the Indians are one of the most surprising teams in the majors and are perched atop their division. But the Indians aren't the only team causing double takes for those who live by the saying: "If the season would end today ... " The Orioles are leading the AL East over the likes of Tampa Bay, New York and Boston.

Prince Fielder's landing in Detroit was a big surprise, but it turns out the Tigers were not the most unexpected entrant in the sweepstakes. The Dodgers were secretly in at the end too, losing out only when the Tigers upped the ante after learning last week that Victor Martinez had severely injured a knee and probably will sit out the upcoming season. Needing a middle-of-the-lineup bat to protect Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers ponied up a nine-year, $214-million contract and on Thursday introduced Fielder as their newest member.

Reporting from Arlington, Texas — The Detroit Tigers may be battered, they may be bruised and they may be one loss away from next season. But they're not done yet. And that, designated hitter Victor Martinez thinks, makes them dangerous entering Saturday's sixth game of the American League Championship Series, which they trail, three games to two. "We don't get this opportunity often," said Martinez, one of four Tigers starters nursing an...
