LAS VEGAS - Last year, boxing promoter Bob Arum took a Manny Pacquiao fight to China and its rich casinos. Wednesday, he lashed out at the go-to boxing site in Las Vegas, the MGM Grand and its massive Garden Arena, with such vitriol that you might assume Top Rank Promotions and its large stable of name fighters won't be back there. Arum, furious that the bulk of the signage in the MGM Grand was not for his Saturday night headliner between Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, but for the May 3 battle between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marco Maidana, was asked if this was it for him and the MGM. “Never say never,” he said.

The promoter for Riverside welterweight Josesito Lopez said Monday that the boxer has verbally agreed to replace Andre Berto and fight former world welterweight champion Victor Ortiz of Oxnard on June 23 at Staples Center. Lopez (29-4, 17 knockouts) last fought in September, dropping a questionable split-decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. protege Jessie Vargas on the undercard of Mayweather's knockout victory over Ortiz. Lopez is a tough, smart boxer "who knows how to use the lost art of digging that left hook to the body," according to promoter Dan Goossen.

Victor Ortiz is less than a year removed from winning six of seven bouts by knockout or technical knockout in five rounds or fewer. It's those memories Ortiz wants to build from, not that messy upset loss to Argentina's Marcos Maidana at Staples Center last June. A one-sided performance like that on Thursday night is what the 23-year-old from Ventura needed to maintain enthusiasm among those who believe Ortiz has a world junior-welterweight title in his future. A Mirror Ball trophy would be the perfect complement to three Olympic medals. And that could happen, because gymnast Aly Raisman, 18, who won three medals (two golds, one silver) at the London Olympics last summer, will compete on "Dancing with the Stars" this season. Raisman, former figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill, boxer Victor Ortiz and NFL star Jacoby Jones will all compete this season on the show, which starts March 18. Hamill, 56, won Olympic gold at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics.

LAS VEGAS - The essence of Saturday night's big fight has been lost in numbers and hyperbole. That essence is as follows: For the last 15 years or so, boxing fans have seen Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his act. Now, they think they have a chance to see Mayweather flat on his back. He has taken the art of brash arrogance to new heights. People don't mind seeing greatness. They just don't want to be told that they are seeing it, especially by the person they are seeing in the ring.

The smallest detail is never far from Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s mind. It has allowed him to compile a bank account that exceeds $100 million, a testament to the fighter's brilliance. "I once introduced him to a guy I knew, and just the other day, six years later, Floyd saw the guy in a crowd and said, 'Hey, there's your friend,' " said Nate Jones, Mayweather Jr.'s close friend and assistant trainer. "This guy remembers things like an elephant. " That brain power is constantly working for Mayweather (44-0, 26 knockouts)

Orlando Cruz was in the middle of training for his world featherweight title fight Tuesday when he heard of Emile Griffith's death. Cruz, who announced he was gay last year, had previously attempted to meet personally with the ailing former world welterweight and middleweight champion who died at age 75 Tuesday in New York. Griffith struggled for years over questions about his sexuality, and was taunted viciously by 1962 opponent Benny Paret. Griffith unloaded repeated unanswered punches on Paret in their Madison Square Garden fight, and Paret died of brain injuries days later.

Josesito Lopez would one day like to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., but the Riverside fighter in no way shares Mayweather's theory of boxing. While Mayweather has made a lucrative, unbeaten career of avoiding punishment in the ring, Lopez, 28, has arrived as a main-event fighter at StubHub Center in Carson - where on Saturday night he faces Argentina's hard-punching Marcos Maidana in a Showtime-televised welterweight bout - by unabashedly engaging in...
