WHEN film director Victor Salva first read Dan Millman's classic new-age memoir, "Way of the Peaceful Warrior," he immediately bonded with the book about a troubled young man who is freed from his selfish strivings by the teachings of a grizzled, guru-like gas station attendant named Socrates.

There's plenty of blood in the supernatural horror flick "Dark House," but what really defines director Victor Salva's latest effort is flop sweat. A haunted house, psychic powers, a father-son mystery, pregnancy terror, the South's history of lynching - Salva and co-writer Charles Agron reach for pretty much any contrivance that might send a fleeting shiver down audience members' spines with too little consideration for narrative cohesion or thematic nuance. Upon his mother's death, clairvoyant Nick (Luke Kleintank)

Despite potentially damaging disclosures that its writer/director is a convicted child molester, the new Walt Disney film "Powder" placed second at the nation's box office over the weekend. The $10-million film grossed a higher-than-expected $7.1 million despite protests from the now-20-year-old victim, who urged the public to boycott the PG-13 movie.

JUST as thousands of people have gone through horror stories no different than Nathan Winters' and Victor Salva's, for me "Peaceful Warrior" shows us how to get through it all. I have seen this film three times now, and its message speaks to me and my own life every time I see it. It is a film about transcendence and overcoming the pain, suffering and hell that life presents to each of us. It is this inspiring theme throughout the film that speaks to...

In your article "Dust Hasn't Settled on 'Powder,' " (Calendar, Oct. 31), only portions of what I was quoted as saying in relation to Victor Salva were presented. Also, what was edited from the story were all the positive remarks I made regarding Victor's work as a truly gifted writer-director during the filming of our two pictures, his impeccable conduct on both movie sets, and the respect and admiration he garnered from cast and crew. Further, to my knowledge, neither Victor Salva or his representatives David Gersh or Michael Levy ever misrepresented anything to me. Victor has served the sentence imposed by the courts.

Re "Disney Movie's Director a Convicted Child Molester," Oct. 25: As heinous a crime as it is, when did the punishment for child molestation become two years in prison and never being able to work again? If this country still believes in rehabilitation and redemption, then Victor Salva, the director of "Powder," has paid his debt to society. I have seen the movie and it is a fine, moral and uplifting film. It is the type of film that is desperately needed in today's media market of sex and violence.

Walt Disney Studios, a name synonymous with family entertainment, has become embroiled in an unlikely controversy with disclosures that the writer/director of its latest film, "Powder," is a convicted child molester. Victor Salva, a former child-care worker who impressed Hollywood filmmakers with his early cinematic work, was sentenced to three years in state prison in 1988 for molesting a 12-year-old boy who had acted in two of his films. Salva videotaped one of the encounters.

GOLDSTEIN'S attempt to rehabilitate Victor Salva's reputation exposes Hollywood's well-earned reputation for having no moral base ["Victor Salva's Horror Stories," June 11]. Gallons of Goldstein's crocodile tears mixed with Francis Ford Coppola's moral relativism will not wash away the stain of Salva's crime. Not even on celluloid. ROBERT MCARTHUR Los Angeles

I read your story on Victor Salva and how sorry he is for molesting Nathan Forrest Winters ["Victor Salva's Horror Stories," June 11]. I am a psychotherapist who works with adults who have been molested as children. I have a problem with the fact that Salva thinks 15 months in jail is enough to atone for what he did. How long has Nathan Winters been in an emotional prison? Molestation can cause years of pain and dysfunction. Has Salva agreed to pay for Nathan's therapy to recover from this abuse?

* New This Week: Victor Salva's "Jeepers Creepers," a clever thriller-chiller about a brother and sister's drive home from college and their desperate race to escape a demonic force, has the scariest opening sequence of any horror picture in recent memory. The result, starring Gina Philips, Justin Long and Jonathan Breck, combines laughter with creepiness and should satisfy many horror fans looking for a diversion. Top 5 VHS rentals: 1. The Princess Diaries 2. Rush Hour 2 3. The Score 4.
