When property owners complained that an ambitious plan to revamp a 123-block stretch of downtown Santa Ana could jeopardize their livelihoods, the plan's map was quietly redrawn. With speakers waiting by the dozens, the Santa Ana City Council on Monday heard hours of impassioned pleas both for and against a 37-story downtown office tower that would dramatically alter the city's skyline. One Broadway Plaza would be Orange County's tallest building and at least twice as tall as any structure in Santa Ana. For months, residents in the neighborhoods that ring downtown and in the city as a whole have been divided over the tower.

As the Santa Ana Planning Commission finalized details of a controversial 37-story office tower this year, the developer took a deposit on a luxury condominium in Hawaii from one of the commissioners in a deal he says could net her a small fortune. Then, 10 days after voting to approve plans for One Broadway Plaza's ground floor, Planning Commissioner Victoria Betancourt took off May 5 for Honolulu on the developer's private jet.

A group of Santa Ana leaders, including a City Council member, a planning commissioner and a community college trustee, have opened the city's first locally owned bank in 40 years, with the hope of finding customers in the area's huge Latino business community. The Santa Ana Business Bank, which opened in October, hopes to provide loans to small businesses that often are turned down by larger banks.

Today, the 17-year-old Garcia is not only a B student, he's an ace on a printing press.
