Lingerie maker Victoria's Secret's annual fashion show is typically an extravagant display of all the ways that underwear can tip into costume. This year one leopard-print outfit featuring a Native American headdress has the retailer apologizing profusely. The controversial number was modeled by Karlie Kloss, who was bedecked with turquoise jewelry along with the headdress made of red, black and white feathers at the Nov. 7 runway show. The headdress, also referred to as a war bonnet, is traditionally worn during special occasions by men who have done brave deeds in battle.

You'd be hard pressed to find a photo of Miranda Kerr looking anything less than absolutely fabulous. She's married to Orlando Bloom, is a top Victoria's Secret model and seems to look perfect in everything she puts on. Whether she's walking down the runway or caught running errands in New York, Kerr is a true fashion chameleon who is always put together and camera ready. During a recent stroll in the Big Apple, Kerr strutted down the street in a beige, belted Victoria Beckham dress and colorblock Prada tote.

Fashion and pop culture have long had a fascination with Native American garb (Ralph Lauren, among others, comes to mind). Some artists and designers have pulled it off successfully, but many of the recent attempts have been, well, controversial. Apologies are in season. Last week, Victoria's Secret had to issue an apology after sending 20-year-old Karlie Kloss down the runway in a floor-length headdress (and little else). (That particular “outfit” won't be part of the CBS broadcast of the fashion show next month.)

Dark-and-edgy teen retailer Hot Topic Inc. is putting its own spin on underwear. The City of Industry company is testing a new lingerie brand called Blackheart and launching five stores in the Southland and Texas this month dedicated to their undergarments. Billed for "girls who rock and roll," Blackheart is going for a slightly older crowd than Hot Topic's typical teen shopper, the 18-to-30-year-olds who care about sexy undies but reject more preppy outlets like Abercrombie & Fitch and J Crew.

Limited, based in Columbus, Ohio, said the performance was the result of a strong effort to control costs. The Limited's successful lingerie business--which has grown to 353 stores nationwide--is about to launch its first national advertising campaign, with a 10-page glossy insert in magazines hitting the stands next month. Developed by the company and FCB/Leber Katz Partners in New York, the advertising will appear in November issues of Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Victoria, House Beautiful, Bon Appetit, New Woman and People magazines.

She recently designed and modeled a back-to-school denim collection for the brand Wall Flower and is a frequent standout on event red carpets. Sex doesn't always sell, and that's a problem plaguing racy lingerie retailer Frederick's of Hollywood Group Inc. Frederick's of Hollywood introduced Americans to the push-up bra after World War II and pioneered the concept of sexy undergarments. But for the last two decades its skimpy outfits have failed to entice shoppers to its stores or to its mail-order business. Now the company is taking come-ons from potential buyers. With competition from retailers such as Victoria's Secret, four straight years of financial losses and shares trading around 30 cents, Frederick's has hired investment bank Allen & Co. to explore strategic moves, "including but not limited to a sale of the company or a business combination," the company announced recently.

Victoria's Secret may have run afoul of Utah's porn czar. Paula Houston, who is believed to be the nation's only state-funded anti-porn ombudsman, said that it's appropriate for citizens to complain if they want posters of models in lingerie removed from a Victoria's Secret store in Provo. The advertisements came under fire after Tina Rivera didn't like the interest her 6-year-old son showed in a poster at Victoria's Secret in the Provo Towne Centre mall.

Maybe it was the lusty mannequins in its stores, the massage oil on its shelves or the overabundance of cleavage on the glittery runway of its annual TV fashion show. But this week, Victoria's Secret Chief Executive Sharen J. Turney acknowledged that the chain had gotten "too sexy." Is such a thing even possible? "We have moved off of our brand heritage," she said in a conference call with analysts. "We use the word 'sexy' a lot and really have forgotten the ultra-feminine."
