More than 1,200 Vietnamese workers who had been stranded in Iraq are flying home this week, Hanoi officials said Thursday. They are among the last 1,800 Vietnamese of the 16,300 in Iraq when the Gulf crisis began. They have left Iraq for Iran.

Two Japanese airliners brought 383 Vietnamese workers stranded in Iraq to Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam on Friday, the Japanese Embassy said. The aircraft, which brought the workers from Cairo after an overnight stop in Tokyo, also carried 80 Thai refugees and two Thai diplomats who were to fly on to Bangkok, the embassy said. The aircraft followed two Japanese flights from Jordan on Wednesday that brought home 572 Vietnamese who had fled Iraq.
