"How to Train Your Dragon" has taken the age-old story of a teenage boy sorting through his fundamental life issues -- fit in, figure out self, get the girl, don't disappoint Dad -- set it in ancient Viking times and still managed to give it a thoroughly modern spin. A millennium later and this kid would head an Internet start-up or have a reality show on cable. For now, he's just a misfit in Ugg boots. Ingenious. Now, just why a Viking leader named Stoick the Vast ever agreed to name his son Hiccup remains a mystery.

Responding to a surge in interest, Viking River Cruises will add 12 new vessels for sailings in 2015.  Just how popular is the river cruise? When Viking launched in 1997, it had four ships cruising in Russia. By 2015, it will have 64 river vessels cruising in Europe, Russia, Asia and Egypt. Forty of those vessels are Viking long ships, which cruise exclusively in Europe and offer a variety of stateroom configurations.  River cruising is the fastest growing segment of the cruise industry, registering a 12% increase in 2012, according to a November article on CruiseCritic . Among Viking's 12 new vessels, the Astrild and the Beyla will be custom built for the Elbe River trip between Berlin and Prague, Czech Republic.

The Cleveland Browns have yet to say who will start at quarterback for them Sunday. Same goes for the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. As for the Philadelphia Eagles? Coach Chip Kelly, tongue firmly planted in cheek, said Monday that Nick Foles will be "the starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years here. " What Kelly was really saying is Foles has played well enough to lock down the job for the moment, but the coach doesn't feel the need to designate anyone a bulletproof starter.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, where Newhall Hart and Canyon Country Canyon have been football powers, it's another school that keeps winning Foothill League championships. Valencia (7-2, 4-0) clinched at least a share of its fifth consecutive league title with a 24-19 upset victory over previously unbeaten Hart (8-1, 3-1) on Friday night. The Vikings had 10 sacks against a team ranked No. 1 in the Northern Division. Only a week ago, Valencia came back from a three-touchdown deficit to defeat Canyon, 35-28.
