Alemany fans should have been in the audience at Village Christian on Saturday night. They would have enjoyed the third quarter, when former Alemany players Bear Henderson and Bennie Boatwright combined to score all 18 of Village Christian's points in a nonleague battle against Sylmar. In the end, the duo was too much. Henderson finished with 25 points and Boatwright had 21 points and 18 rebounds in an 80-73 victory. If there were a three-point shooting contest, Boatwright, a junior, would win going away.

Here comes the Coachmobile, and at Village Christian High, that means it's time for the football team to get busy. Village Christian Coach Mike Plaisance cruises from his office on the upper campus at Village Christian to the lower-campus practice field in a golf cart painted in Crusader red and gold. "Coachmobile" is painted in block letters on the front end and the license plate reads "Coach 33," in tribute to the number Plaisance wore as a fullback at Grambling State.

Sometimes during quiet moments, Jim Stone takes a peek at the Sun Valley Village Christian softball schedule and finds himself staring in disbelief. "I just shake my head and say, 'What was I thinking?' " the Crusader coach said. Other times, he studies the Southern Section Division V championship trophy his team won last year and recalls how badly he would like another.

The last time Alpha League rivals Village Christian and L.A. Baptist highs met, the Crusaders cruised to a 19-point victory. Neither team was cruising Tuesday night, however, in a league rematch at Canyon High. But although L.A. Baptist dominated inside and maintained the lead for the better part of the game, the result was the same: a Village Christian victory. Mike Spielman's free throw with 14 seconds remaining proved to be the difference and lifted Village Christian to a 44-43 victory.

Ventura St. Bonaventure, Westlake Village Oaks Christian, La Verne Damien and Glendora St. Lucy's have won their arbitration cases against the CIF Southern Section and will remain in their current sports areas for the upcoming re-leaguing cycle from 2014-18, according to the decision announced Friday by a retired judge. Lights, camera, action! It's time for some arbitration hardball. Attorneys representing four private schools and the CIF Southern Section will gather Tuesday and Wednesday to present their arguments as part of a binding arbitration hearing to determine whether Ventura St. Bonaventure, Westlake Village Oaks Christian, La Verne Damien and Glendora St. Lucy's will have to switch sports leagues in the fall. It's similar to one of those Major League Baseball arbitration hearings, in which the team and the player each submit a contract figure and the arbitrator chooses one. In this case, each school will present its arguments, the Southern Section will present its response and the arbitrator will make a decision within a week.
