With nearly 1,900 elementary and high school students on its pastoral campus, it has one of the largest enrollments of any Christian school in the country outside the Roman Catholic educational system. Yet Village Christian Schools in Sun Valley are relatively unknown, even in religious circles. The 30-acre campus lacks connections to a denomination or a large church. Nor is it visible from any thoroughfare.

A 15-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded Thursday during a gang fight on the street outside Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, authorities said. About 55 students were on campus at the time of the shooting, which disrupted an on-campus tennis match, but there were no other injuries, police said. The altercation apparently started as a fistfight between two gangs in the faculty parking lot, and erupted into gunfire after one of the youths pulled a firearm out of his car, said Sgt.

Two fifth grade classes at Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School in Northridge relived America's colonial times recently with its annual "Back to the Past" day of fun and learning. Students dressed the part and made quilts, cornhusk dolls and corn bread. They even churned cream into butter, said teacher Gail Shapiro. "Life as a colonist was really hard," said Rebecca Finkel, 10.
