Reporting from New York The game had been over for more than 20 minutes, and Lazeric Jones still seemed unsure of himself. The UCLA junior guard and his teammates had been repeatedly beaten by Villanova's breakneck backcourt tandem of Corey Fisher and Maalik Wayns, a blur unlike anything the Bruins had experienced in three season-opening victories over mid-major teams. "I tried, I guess," Jones said. "I didn't do a great job at it. I guess we have to go back in practice and correct some things.

Missing from the Southern Section playoffs are Villanova Prep and Santa Paula. The two schools played in an overtime game last week that saw players from both benches come onto the court near the game's conclusion after two players got tangled up, according to Villanova Coach Jon Wyers. Players who leave the bench must miss the next game. Santa Paula pulled its team out of consideration for a playoff spot. Villanova Prep also is not in the playoffs. Eric.sondheimer@latimes.com

Andrew Selle threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jabin Sambrano to pull Montana to within 23-21 with 1 minute 7 seconds left, but the onside kick attempt went out of bounds and Villanova made a first down before running out the clock.

Chris Wright scored 27 points and No. 22 Georgetown sailed past third-ranked Syracuse, 91-84, in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament Thursday at New York. Syracuse (28-4) is left to wonder whether it has done enough to earn a No. 1 seeding in the NCAA tournament, but also has to worry about Arinze Onuaku. He hurt his right knee and did not return to the game, and was expected to get an MRI exam when the team returned home. Austin Freeman added 18 points and Jason Clark 17 for the No. 8-seeded Hoyas (22-9)

David Hartman of Canyon High has committed to compete in track and cross-country at Villanova, choosing the Wildcats over Wisconsin and Arizona. Hartman visited Villanova two weeks ago and decided Friday that he preferred the Philadelphia school because of its location and the changes in its track program. Marty Stern, the school's successful coach of the women's track team, took over the men's program this year. "I wanted to go away and experience a different culture," Hartman said.

Scottie Reynolds learned a lesson starting the game on the bench. Once in the game, he delivered a teachable moment of his own to 15th-seeded Robert Morris: Don't let a Final Four-tested team like Villanova off the hook. Reynolds was benched, his shot wasn't falling and his Wildcats were on the brink of having their NCAA tournament run end in a huge upset. He responded with a clutch performance at the foul line in the final minutes of regulation, and No. 2-seeded Villanova (25-7)

The two conferences growing out of the old Big East are moving forward. Butler, Creighton and Xavier will join the so-called Catholic 7 schools in the new basketball conference keeping the Big East name, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement will not take place until Wednesday, when it will be made in conjunction with a news conference on the league's broadcast deal with Fox. Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette and DePaul left to form a new league for next season.

Villanova guard Maalik Wayns, a sturdy junior who had been averaging more than 20 points a game, squared up for three-point shots, moved through the lane as if he were invisible only to appear at the basket for layups and generally created shots from everywhere and scored a career-high 29 points Friday. Yet it was St. Louis Coach Rick Majerus who was praising his players for their great defense, in particular against Wayns. The Billikens, who had already roundly defeated Washington from the Pac-12 Conference, grabbed a no-doubt 80-68 win against the Wildcats from the Big East and advanced to the championship game of the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Big Ten champion was no big deal to Villanova, a team that had been force-fed a regular diet of Georgetown, St. John's and Syracuse. "We heard it all," guard Gary McLain said. "We heard all the time how we were playing the Big Ten champs, Michigan, how they were ranked No. 2 in the country and had a long winning streak and everything. But there's nothing gonna intimidate us."

The basketball team formerly known as UCLA has been anything but a juggernaut in the 20 months since it last played Villanova. There was a losing season, for starters. Defeats by 27 and 29 points. A March that didn't include the NCAA tournament. So when the Bruins play seventh-ranked Villanova on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in a semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off, they will have more to gain than a trip to the championship of an early-season tournament. A victory over the Wildcats (4-0)
