Newport Harbor's Amber Steen, The Times' Orange County runner of the year in cross-country this season, committed to Arizona, she said Monday. Steen also visited UC Irvine and Oregon, but chose Arizona because of its location. Steen said passing on the Anteaters was especially difficult because of Vince O'Boyle, UCI's cross-country and track coach. "If I could have taken O'Boyle to Arizona, I wouldn't have waited so long to decide," she said.

The U.S. Olympic Festival this week at Oklahoma City will provide different opportunities for the 75 or so Orange County athletes who will participate. For athletes such as 1988 Olympic shotputters Jim Doehring and Bonnie Dasse and Peter Campbell, a two-time Olympic water polo player, the Olympic Festival represents a chance to get together with friends--and rivals--while competing largely free of high stakes and pressure.

Miscellany Women's golf and women's indoor track will begin play at UC Irvine in the 2001-2002 school year. A search for a golf coach will begin next month, according to a statement from Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. Current track and field Coach Vince O'Boyle will handle the indoor program. However, Irvine does not have an indoor track facility and one is not planned any time soon. That means, according to a spokesman, that the Anteaters will travel to compete in all meets and invitationals.

Mike Powell long-jumped for UC Irvine. Steve Scott ran the mile. Now, it appears, no other man ever will. Brady Anderson used to hit baseballs at Anteater Field. Gary Wheelock, the old Angel and Seattle Mariner, used to pitch them. Now, Anteater Field is desolate, deserted, and there's no reason for anybody to come back.
