Like his movies, director Robert Altman often seems to operate on multiple tracks. He can be expansive and guarded, intellectual and jokey, warm and acrid, free-wheeling and wary, all at the same time. Right now, high in the hills above Malibu beach, in his combination house-editing room-preproduction office, he is all of those things. "I used to love living on the ocean," Altman, now 65, says, looking down at the Pacific.
