Two former roommates of admitted serial rapist Vincent Henry Sanchez have split a $25,000 reward the city offered three years ago for information leading to the person behind a string of sexual assaults dating back to 1996. Stephen Frueh, 33, and Joshua Reno, 25, were among the men living in a rented home on Woodrow Avenue in Simi Valley with Sanchez when he was arrested last July on suspicion of burglary.

A Simi Valley handyman linked to a string of violent sexual assaults was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder and kidnapping in the July 5 slaying of a 20-year-old college student. Prosecutors further allege that 30-year-old Vincent Henry Sanchez killed Megan Barroso during a kidnapping and a rape or attempted rape. The allegations make Sanchez eligible for the death penalty. Sanchez, a short, dark-haired man, did not enter a plea. An arraignment was postponed until Sept. 25.

Police said Thursday they believe two men who abducted and raped a 17-year-old Japanese exchange student in Oxnard earlier this week also tried to snatch a woman off a Moorpark street last week. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department and the Oxnard Police Department are expanding the search for the men countywide. "This is a high priority for the sheriff's office and the Oxnard Police Department," said Sheriff's Det. Mike Christensen, who is handling the Moorpark case.

After four long years of dead ends, the search for the Simi Valley serial rapist was so cold last summer that night-shift officers were told to cruise the city for young men and ask for saliva samples on the spot. With help from scientists at the county's crime lab, who analyzed hundreds of swabs volunteered by men during the year, the hope was for a match with DNA evidence left on several victims. In the end, an arrest came through pure luck.
