NEW YORK -- Popularity on social media platforms and an increase of MTV2's male viewers were among the virtues touted by MTV at its upfront presentation Thursday, amid a smaller-than-usual development slate and some rocky recent ratings. The network is looking for a rebound this year after 2012 numbers were down -- prime-time viewership among adults 18-34, for instance, dropped 27% compared with the previous year. The network also announced several new projects for MTV: a pilot greenlight for a series based on the “Scream” franchise as well as new series such as “Generation Cryo” and “Nurse Nation.” PHOTOS: 2013 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals Clips for “Generation Cryo” showed the teenage daughter of a lesbian couple seeking out her biological father and other children from the same sperm donor.

It's the gift that keeps on giving: MTV's omnipresent "Jersey Shore" has spawned another offshoot, with the network announcing Tuesday that the show's palest cast member, Vinny Guadagnino, will be getting a hybrid talk show/reality series. "The Show With Vinny" -- yep, that's its name -- is described as a series that "will shatter the typical talk show format. " And maybe it will: Guadagnino will welcome celebrities into his family's home in Staten Island, New York. His mama Paula and Uncle Nino, whom viewers have come to know on "Jersey Shore," will be fixtures, offering commentary along the way. And pounds of pasta are sure to be consumed.

If you're part of a reality TV show and might be famous for 15 minutes, tops, it's probably best to cash in while you can. But what if you're not a breakout star on the Kim Kardashian level? No worries. Blue-chip national advertisers, nightclub promoters and book publishers still want you. And they're willing to fork over real money — sometimes six figures and up — for your recognizable face. While the Kardashian klan is pulling down a reported $65 million annually and "Jersey Shore's" Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino banked as much as $5 million last year alone, lesser players in the reality show game are riding their relative popularity to notable financial gain.

Outside Florence's ancient Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, people are milling around the quiet Piazza del Duomo, calmly taking in the last moments of a May evening. Just a few blocks away, inside a renovated bank building, a much noisier scene is unfolding. The buzzing of electric hair clippers can be heard through the walls as a quartet of amateur barbers unsuccessfully attempts to fade a hairline. Pranksters hold a stuffed squirrel hostage. Two lovers forlornly debate their relationship as their scantily clad roommate insensitively interrupts to smoke a cigarette.

We're less than two weeks away from the so-called end of the world, and MTV wants you to sit on a couch - for seven days! - to watch a "Jersey Shore" marathon. In anticipation of the long-running reality spectacle's series finale Dec. 20, the network will kick off seven consecutive days of “Jersey Shore” on Dec. 13 so fans can take a stroll down memory lane--reliving all the drunken spills, panty-less somersaults and aggressive GTL-ing. “Jersey Shore” was a seminal moment in MTV's programming - averaging as many as 8 million viewers in its peak season and fist-pumping its way into to the pop culture zeitgeist.
