An informal survey of the club scene earlier this week revealed wild horses--let alone flooding--won't keep L.A. scenesters in their homes. The entrance to Bianca's Hole at the Whisky on Monday was nearly as flooded with fans as the Southland's streets were with water. Across the boulevard at the Viper Room, club-goers were paying $10 a pop at midnight to see Chuck E. Weiss. The nearby House of Blues was letting hundreds of folks in for free for a musical tribute to Tom Petty.

ART UCLA Art Department Picks Head: Mary Kelly, an artist and art theorist who has directed the studio portion of the Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program in New York since 1989, has been appointed chair of UCLA's art department. She succeeds Henry T. Hopkins, who stepped down last year to become full-time director of the UCLA/Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center. Kelly has exhibited her work widely, including at UCLA/Hammer's recent "Sexual Politics" show.

So there I was at the Hollywood Canteen, sandwiched between five supermodels. As I sucked down some raspberry apple tobacco from an enormous hookah pipe, I realized that it's gonna be a rockin' summer. Not only has a stellar array of new venues opened up just in time for the warm weather crush, but they're attracting a sharp new wave of cropped-top clubgoers, each angling for some hot times in the city.
