His publicist quickly labeled the incident exhaustion.

That is not his hair. The man called Ratchet is alone on stage for a moment, indulging in the mindless bliss and ego of a heavy metal guitar solo. The wig on his head looks like roadkill, long and frazzled and soaked in hairspray, but the leopard scarf across his forehead at least matches his spandex tights.

And though a space such as Club Lingerie was once the heart of the underground music scene, it can close its neon-lighted doors without a tear shed by those who called it home. In this trend-eat-trend world, it's a wonder there are any survivors.

Chuck E. Weiss, the musician who co-owns the Viper Room, said he always hoped to keep the Sunset Strip club a pure music haven--not part of the Hollywood celebrity circuit. In the wake of the death early Sunday morning of actor River Phoenix, however, Weiss said he knows that the Viper may be destined to become a magnet for curiosity-seekers--much like the Chateau Marmont in the months after the death there in 1982 of actor John Belushi.

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee was booked on suspicion of abusing his wife, actress Pamela Anderson Lee, Wednesday after an altercation in their Malibu home, authorities said. The tattooed heavy metal rocker was arrested after Pamela Lee dialed 911 and told authorities that he had "physically assaulted" her Tuesday night, police said.

MOVIES Honoring Acting, AIDS Activism: Elizabeth Taylor will receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award during the annual SAG awards, airing March 8 on cable's TNT. Taylor, 65, will be the 34th recipient of the award, which honors both career achievement and humanitarian efforts. Past recipients have included Robert Redford, Audrey Hepburn, George Burns, Katharine Hepburn and Frank Sinatra. Taylor previously received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award in 1993.

The Los Angeles city attorney's office has tentatively agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a woman who lost an eye after a police officer shot her with a beanbag projectile because he mistakenly believed she was reaching for a weapon. The proposed settlement with Annette Amoroso, 40, comes amid allegations by her attorneys that police investigators withheld a videotape from the evening she was shot that might have been key evidence in the case.
