Vito Clemente stood on the sidelines, wearing the black jacket donned by the walking wounded on the Cal State Northridge football team, and could hardly contain himself. Slowed by a swollen right knee but his mouth working full speed, Clemente cheered whenever someone lowered the boom on a ballcarrier during practice late last week. Some of that punishment, Clemente figured, should have been dished out by him. "I definitely feel I'm a banger," Clemente said. "I'm definitely a physical player.

Coach Bob Toledo had to call a brief halt in the morning practice Saturday to tell his charges to stop hitting so hard. The workout was in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, and some of the defensive players were a little more aggressive than the coaches planned. "I like that," Toledo said. "It's always better to tell them to slow down than to try to get them to go faster."

Except for the in-between time, Crespi High played the state's top-ranked football team dead even Friday night. Unfortunately for the Celts, there is much more to a football game than a beginning and an end. Bishop Amat junior quarterback James Free proved that best, throwing three touchdown passes and virtually having his way with the Celts' secondary in the second and third quarters to fuel the Lancers' 35-7 victory over Crespi in a Del Rey League opener at Pierce College.

Going into its Southern Section Division I semifinal against Encino Crespi, Coach Tom Hoak admitted that No. 1 Rialto Eisenhower was looking past the Celts. "Maybe we were thinking too much about playing for the championship," Hoak said. It showed. Crespi led at halftime and nearly pulled off a huge upset before losing, 7-3, Saturday night before 6,000 at Eisenhower. The Eagles (13-0) will meet Mater Dei in the final Friday night.

Administrators of the Western State Conference will meet Oct. 8 to discuss possible sanctions against the Ventura College men's basketball program. The findings of a five-month investigation last week determined former Coach Virgil Watson and other Ventura representatives violated state rules. Conference commissioner Aviva Kamin said she will recommend Ventura be stripped of its 1996 and '97 WSC titles, and speculated the Pirates' 1996 state title also will be revoked.

Moral victory? What's a moral victory? Although Crespi High played well on Saturday night, the Celts blew a 10-point lead and lost, 17-10, to Loyola in a Del Rey League game at Glendale High. "There is no satisfaction at all," Crespi quarterback Dave Lins said. "They had one or two big plays. That was it. We should have killed these guys."
