Anderson Silva did not do much of anything in the first three minutes of his Ultimate Fighting Championship title defense Saturday night against Vitor Belfort. Then came the kick. Unleashing a wicked left kick that moved Belfort's jaw toward his nose, Silva knocked down the former UFC champion, hesitated briefly to ensure there were signs of alertness, then moved in for a right punch and a left that led referee Mario Yamasaki to stop the fight at the 3-minute 25-second mark.

UFC 172 takes place Saturday night with the UFC running Baltimore for the first time. The event is headlined by a UFC light heavyweight title contest between champion Jon Jones and challenger Glover Teixeira. Jones, a dominant champion and a fighter considered by many to be the pound for pound best in the world, is coming off the most competitive fight of his career against Alexander Gustafsson. The question is how Jones will respond in his next fight against a competitor who has won 20 straight fights dating back to 2006, when his training partner Chuck Liddell was still UFC light heavyweight kingpin.

Anderson Silva doesn't say much to reporters, letting his interpreter-manager be more expansive. The long-reigning middleweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship can afford such comforts while riding a 12-0 record in the organization dating to 2006, but like his invincibility, tolerance with such smugness is slipping away. Silva, 35, faces his former training partner and former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, 33, in the main event of the UFC pay-per-view card Saturday night at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Hours after Nevada disallowed fighters from therapeutic-use exemptions for testosterone, Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title challenger Vitor Belfort of Brazil withdrew from his scheduled May 24 championship shot at Chris Weidman. Former light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida will now fight Weidman at the MGM Grand. The 36-year-old Belfort (24-10), who last had a title shot against then-middleweight champion Anderson Silva in 2011 and has fought in the UFC since 1997, has used testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)

Light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones made an unprecedented stand against the Ultimate Fighting Championship last month - he declined to fight a last-minute substitute, prompting the first-ever cancellation of an entire UFC card. His mother, Camille, beamed with pride. "That was so Mama," she said. "I would be miserable if I was being forced to do something I didn't believe in. He's not only an athlete, but a businessman and a thinker. " It turns out the three sons of "Mama" Jones and her husband, Arthur, have had a major impact on American sports - and they will be on full display this weekend.

In a stare-down between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the light-heavyweight champion generally considered its most marketable star, the UFC blinked Thursday. Jon Jones rejected an order to fight the UFC's suggested injury-replacement fighter, Chael Sonnen, and the organization thus took the unprecedented step of scrapping its entire UFC 151 card, scheduled for Sept. 1 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. "This is probably one of my all-time lows as being president of UFC," said Dana White.

For the third consecutive Ultimate Fighting Championship event in Las Vegas, one question dominates: So, when is Brock Lesnar fighting again? The UFC will stage a third straight title-less Vegas main event Saturday night when veteran light-heavyweights Randy Couture and Mark Coleman lead the card of UFC 109 at Mandalay Bay Events Center. "There's great fights on this card . . . me and Mark are a couple of old wrestlers banging heads, two active Hall of Famers," Couture said. The undercard features a middleweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen, with the winner getting a future title shot against the winner of April's title bout between champion Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.

LAS VEGAS - Vitor Belfort said he hurts for injured countryman Anderson Silva, but has a plan to gain a measure of Brazilian revenge as the next opponent for Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Chris Weidman. “The belt's in the hands of a guy named Chris Weidman, but it belongs to me,” Belfort said late Saturday at the MGM Grand following the horrific lower-left-leg injury suffered by Silva in the second round of the UFC 168 title fight. Silva, 38, underwent emergency surgery to treat the broken leg he suffered when kicking Weidman's left shin in the second round.

LAS VEGAS -- What's supposed to be a difficult fight for Anderson Silva on Saturday night makes the Ultimate Fighting Championship's recent deep investment in the fighter a tense evening for fight executives. Silva is 38 and is just three title fights removed from his perilous final-round survival against Chael Sonnen in 2010. Saturday night, MGM Resorts listed Silva (33-4) as less than a 3-1 favorite to defeat skilled wrestler Chris Weidman, 29, at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Still, the UFC opted last month to secure Silva with a 10-fight contract that far exceeds their standard six-fight deal.

Anderson Silva is the Ultimate Fighting Championship's version of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the perfect mixed martial artist whose unbeaten run as middleweight champion since 2006 is testimony to the variety of his skills in the octagon. In winning 15 consecutive fights, Silva (29-4) has delivered a defining kung fu kick to the jaw to defeat Vitor Belfort, withstood the best wrestling effort of Dan Henderson to win a submission, ripped former champion Rich Franklin twice with fight-ending knees and knocked out another ex-champion, Forrest Griffin.

UFC light heavyweight title: Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen Jones is one of the most skilled and dominant fighters in the history of the sport, even at an early age. He seemingly has no weaknesses, mixing great wrestling with dangerous striking and a winner's mentality. However, he hasn't connected with fans in the way that UFC would have hoped for such a successful champion.
