The word last Wednesday at Venice High School was demoniac. At lunchtime, 16-year-old Christina Rounds approached Venice Principal Andrea L. Natker and said, "Her demoniac attitude caused the younger children to act poorly." It wasn't the snappiest conversation starter ever, but it won Christina a Snickers bar. She had used Venice's word of the day properly in a sentence. She had demonstrated she knew that demoniac means "influenced by a demon, like a fiend."

Norman Yonemoto, a Los Angeles artist who along with his younger brother, Bruce, created innovative video installations that often explored mass media, Hollywood and other forms of pop culture, has died. He was 67. Yonemoto died Friday at his home in Venice. He had been in ill health since suffering a number of strokes, the last of which was in October, said Carole Ann Klonarides, a family representative. Collaborating with his brother for nearly four decades, Yonemoto created video artwork that often appropriated the visual vernacular of Hollywood movies, television and advertising to challenge the viewer's assumptions about the media.

Re "Sesquipedalians and Other Obfuscations, April 2. While I agree it is a writer's job to communicate effectively, I am appalled by anyone willing to "dumb down" content for their audience. God forbid someone actually increase their vocabulary through reading the newspaper! What a shame to cater to the lowest common denominator instead of raising the bar. KIMBERLY HORN, Lancaster

To spank or not to spank: For most American parents, it isn't a question. The majority of U.S. children have been spanked at some time in their life, despite a robust body of evidence that suggests spanking a child leads to problems in the future.  The latest evidence of the negative effects of spanking comes from researchers at Columbia University. After analyzing data from more than 1,500 families, they found that children who are spanked in early childhood are not only more likely to be aggressive as older children, they are also more likely to do worse on vocabulary tests than their peers who had not been spanked.  The study was published this week in the journal Pediatrics.  While several studies have found a connection between spanking and aggressive behavior, the finding that spanking could be linked to cognitive ability is somewhat new. "Only a few studies have looked at the cognitive effects of spanking," said Michael MacKenzie, an associate professor at Columbia University and lead author of the study.

IT'S NOT that great a fall from adulation to "approbation." What Woody Allen ("Next Stop, Barcelona," by Rachel Abramowitz, Aug. 10) got and richly deserved was mass opprobrium. That must be what Rachel Abramowitz meant. Is opprobrium going the way of nonplused? I am, well, genuinely nonplused at the degradation of the English language in leading newspapers. We won't even talk about TV. Stan Shatenstein Montreal

The difference between the words "boil" and "broil" may seem like only one letter. But for a chef, they describe very different cooking techniques that, depending on when they are used, could result in a masterpiece or burnt offerings. Increasing your vocabulary and knowing the meanings of words is important no matter what you do.

Shawn Boskie has a videotape of the game he pitched in Camden Yards last Sept. 6, when Baltimore Oriole shortstop Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive-games record of 2,130, but he hasn't watched it. "I can remember clearly everything that happened," Boskie said. "Maybe one day, 40 years from now, it will be neat to watch." The 22-minute standing ovation for Ripken, his spontaneous victory lap around the field, the three solo home runs Boskie gave up--one to Ripken--in a 4-2 loss . . .

Impressed by the attention the National Spelling Bee has received in recent years -- especially the 8.5 million viewers it attracted in a prime-time telecast on ABC in June -- cable-network GSN is launching a National Vocabulary Championship for high school students, with the winner to receive $40,000 when the final competition is telecast in February. Students in grades 9 through 12 can register to enter, and receive vocabulary-enhancing study materials, at www.winwithwords.com.

Imagine a stage awash with performers shrouded in yards of colorful, diaphanous fabric. They move in stately, fluid patterns under ever-changing colored lights to live music or to the rise and fall of the spoken voice. The spectacle combines something of the sensuousness of a '60s light show with the spiritualistic aura of early 20th-Century modern dance.

Sitting down? Take a deep breath. Swallow your coffee. This is what San Diego State Coach Al Luginbill was pleased with Sunday: his defense . Historically, SDSU has lit up the scoreboard for 35 points, then allowed 40. Against Pacific Saturday, the Aztecs (3-3-1) scored 35 and allowed . . . 7. "We've been getting better defensively, but we've had nothing to show for it," Luginbill said.

When the pressure reached its nail-biting peak, when the St. Louis Blues twice took leads over the Kings on Monday and could have seized control of Game 4 of their playoff series - and the series itself - the Kings knew it was time to remain purposeful, not to panic. "We've been in that position before and I think these guys don't get too down on themselves," forward Jeff Carter said Tuesday. "We stayed calm and we chipped away. " Goals by Carter and Dustin Penner brought the Kings from 2-0 down to even before the end of the first period.

Wouldn't this be fun to hear at this year's National Spelling Bee: "May I have the definition please?" "No, you should already know it. " Well, things might not get that drastic, but for the first time in its 86-year history, the National Spelling Bee will require contestants to know what the words mean as well as how to spell them. To qualify for the semifinals and finals, spellers will be judged on a cumulative score that incorporates live spelling, computer-based spelling questions and computer-based vocabulary questions, organizers announced Tuesday.

The vocabulary of meditation can be a barrier for people who feel that they're entering a strange world, experts say. Here are some common words. Buddha : meaning one who is awake, in Sanskrit. The Buddha was a person, not a god, who lived more than 2,000 years ago; from a privileged family, he became a seeker of truth and eventually became enlightened. Dharma : often used to mean the teachings of Buddhism and meditation. Mantra : a word -- "om" being perhaps the most famous -- repeated as a way to keep the mind focused on one spot during meditation.

In an attempt to replicate the early experiences of infants, researchers in England have created a robot that can learn simple words in minutes just by having a conversation with a person. The work, published this week in the journal PLoS One, offers insight into how babies transition from babbling to speaking their first words. The 3-foot-tall robot, named DeeChee, was built to produce any syllable in the English language. But it knew no words at the outset of the study, speaking only babble phrases.

Priscilla Castro grew up enthralled with French culture despite understanding few words of the movies and music in which she delighted. Now Castro's facility with Spanish, which her family spoke at home, is serving as an unlikely bridge to mastering le Français in a unique Cal State Long Beach program designed to exploit Spanish speakers' existing language skills. "I'm not 100% fluent, but I can hold a conversation," said Castro, 21, a journalism major. "A lot of things in Spanish are very similar, although because I learned Spanish at home, I didn't know a lot of the grammatical rules.
