In a major revamp, Scher-Voit Commercial Brokerage Co. in Irvine will get a new name and a new president by year's end, and co-founder Lawrence M. Scher will resign. As part of a strategy to integrate the real estate brokerage with a sister operation, Voit Cos. in Woodland Hills, Sher-Voit will become Voit Commercial Brokerage Co., officials said Friday. Robert D. Voit, president of Voit Cos., will act as president of the brokerage until the position is filled.

Deals in the Making: Makena Properties, an investment firm in San Juan Capistrano, has purchased McFadden Plaza, a 272,302-square-foot retail center in Santa Ana for $9.25 million, and Voit Commercial Brokerage represented the seller, Western and Southern Life Insurance Co. of Cincinnati. Besides that deal, Voit's Anaheim office has closed more than $21 million worth of sales in office and industrial properties, said David Elliott, managing partner of the office.

New Voit President: David McKenney, 50, is the new president of Voit Commercial Brokerage, an Irvine-based company with 110 brokers. Formerly managing director of Cushman & Wakefield's Southern California operations, McKenney was responsible for the brokerage, management services, development consulting and appraisal services. McKenney said he hopes to expand the brokerage, which is a subsidiary of Voit Cos. of Woodland.

Old Town Irvine is not in the heart of the Orange County city of 98,000, but the formerly ramshackle structures at Sand Canyon Avenue and the Santa Ana Freeway are attracting upscale shoppers who like the idea of a hotel made out an old lima bean silo and a fast-food place made from a blacksmith shop. The $20-million project is being developed on 6.5 acres contributed by the Irvine Co., a partner in the project with Robert B. Smith, James W. Ray, Michael D. Ray and Bernice Anglea.
