In addition, THQ has assumed approximately $500,000 in net liabilities for Volition's operations. THQ Inc., a video-game software publisher, plans to buy closely held game developer Rainbow Studios for about $57.4 million in stock, to add to its ranks of game programmers and artists. THQ, publisher of games such as "Rugrats" and "WWF Smack Down," will exchange 1 million shares for Rainbow Studios, based in Phoenix, the company said in a statement. THQ, of Calabasas Hills, publishes games for computers and game systems including Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2, Nintendo Co.'

THQ? RIP. The Agoura Hills video game publisher that only five years ago had a market value of more than $2 billion sold most of its assets at a bankruptcy auction that closed on Tuesday. Games in development and production studios owned by THQ were bought by a variety of competitors for a total of $72 million, according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. That exceeded a "stalking horse" bid THQ had from private investment firm Clearlake Capital Group, which offered to take the entire company private for $60 million.
