The Van Nuys High girls' volleyball team was named the top seed in the City Section 4-A Division playoffs, a high hurdle to clear, considering that the Wolves play in a 3-A conference. Tuesday, the Wolves were hit with another obstacle before their first-round playoff match against El Camino Real. City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege asked to see the transfer paperwork of Van Nuys outside hitter Sharon Foster.

The NCAA has denied appeals for eligibility this season for two Cal State Fullerton recruits. Soccer player Marco Mesrobian and volleyball player Rochelle Esparza won't be able to compete this season after failing to meet NCAA academic requirements for entering freshmen. Esparza was the Southern Section Division I player of the year at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa last season. Mesrobian was a standout player at Glendale Hoover.

Four Cal State Northridge volleyball players received passing grades on Wednesday, while the campus remained closed and classes were not in session. Jason Hughes, Ed Bond, Cameron Green and Eric Klootwyk were granted waivers giving them immediate academic eligibility, associate athletic director Judith Brame said. The players were taking classes between semesters in an attempt raise their grade-point averages above 2.0, thereby satisfying Northridge's academic requirement for eligibility.
