College student Mali Vang knows what it's like to struggle. The 21-year-old Hmong immigrant from Laos shares a home with 12 relatives--her parents, five siblings, an aunt and four cousins. At 15, she began working in fast-food restaurants to help the family survive and to save for her education at Rancho Santiago Community College. But there won't be another burger-flipping job for her this year.

Carol Patterson and other residents of the Harbor Health Care nursing home in Fullerton were so moved by the television pictures of suffering in Rwanda and Zaire that they decided to do something about it. This morning they will open a drop-off point for donations to the Rwandan relief effort. "We've been watching the pictures and talking about it. We wished we could do something," said Patterson, a retired Costa Mesa schoolteacher. "Here's an opportunity to help."

Longtime volunteer Milt Jacobson has been honored for his time and effort in helping civic and charitable organizations in the city. Jacobson was named Volunteer of the Year for the area by the California Parks and Recreation Society, which pointed to his contributions to many nonprofit groups in Saddleback Valley.

From her hotel room in Bettendorf, Iowa, not far from the overflowing banks of the Mississippi River, Judy Tuohey was thinking of the man crying in the rain. "He was just standing in the hotel parking lot," Tuohey, 57, a Laguna Hills resident and volunteer with the American Red Cross, said Wednesday. "It was just from frustration. He was a volunteer and he just couldn't do any more."
