USC quarterback Matt Barkley rarely, if ever, shies from giving straightforward answers when asked for his opinion. But Barkley's published comments about Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict were apparently too candid for the Pacific 12 Conference. On Tuesday, the Pac-12 reprimanded Barkley for "derogatory and inflammatory comments" he made about Burfict before last week's game at Tempe, Ariz. Barkley told The Times' Baxter Holmes that, based on his experience playing against Burfict in high school, he thought the former Corona Centennial High star was "a dirty player.

Tyrann Mathieu was a third-round gamble. Nobody wanted Vontaze Burfict. Josh McCown's career as a journeyman NFL quarterback was ostensibly over, and he was coaching high school football in North Carolina. And Danny Woodhead? He's been overlooked forever. They are the unlikely reliables, under-the-radar overachievers who are helping keep playoff dreams alive for their teams. The household names will always be key, but for clubs that reach the postseason, it's often the unexpected players who bubble to the surface with major contributions.

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict had the most dramatic plunge in the NFL draft, going from a player who was widely believed to be a first-round prospect a few months ago to an undrafted free-agent signee of the Cincinnati Bengals. The oft-penalized Burfict had as many red flags as yellow ones. His final season was riddled with 15-yard penalties; he fought with teammates and refused to enter a game late in the season; he was overweight and slow at the combine, running a 5-flat 40, and, according to FoxSports.com, failed a drug test there.

Football is a contact sport, so it makes perfect sense that the ideal linebacker is someone who enjoys making jarring tackles. "I love collisions," said Isaiah Bowens, a senior from La Puente Bishop Amat. Quarterbacks, running backs and receivers beware. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Bowens thrives on roaming the field using his 4.6-second 40-yard speed, then zeroing in on his target. "When he gets near the ball, the play ends," Coach Steve Hagerty said. "You can't say that with most kids."

USC quarterback Matt Barkley continued to struggle on Saturday in the Trojans' 14-9 victory over Arizona State. Barkley completed only seven of 22 passes for 112 yards, 75 of which came on a catch-and-run touchdown by receiver Damian Williams . Barkley was four for 11 for 24 yards in the first half and three for 11 for 88 yards in the second. He had one pass intercepted, and might have had two more if not for a penalty that overturned one and a drop that prevented another.

USC knew what it was facing, however unorthodox, before the Trojans played top-ranked Oregon. Arizona State might be more mainstream, but also perhaps more unpredictable. As in: Which Sun Devils team will show up Saturday night at the Coliseum? Arizona State is 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference. The Sun Devils defeated Washington and Washington State, and lost to Oregon, Oregon State and California in conference play. Still, Arizona State, under fourth-year Coach Dennis Erickson , seems better than its record indicates.

Our tour of Pacific 10 Conference schools today focuses on desert landscapes. Team A: The most valuable player on offense is the kicker, the three-headed quarterback situation remains unsettled, the offense is punchless but the defense is lights out — probably yours. Does that sound like a team coached by offensive guru Dennis Erickson? Team B: Defense got run over by Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl last season, loses seven starters and is the biggest question mark entering the 2010 season.

Corona Centennial High is only 50 miles from downtown Los Angeles, about 350 from Tempe, Ariz. But looking at Arizona State's football roster, you'd never know it. Corona and nearby Norco almost qualify as Phoenix suburbs when it comes to Sun Devils recruiting. Six players from Corona Centennial High and five from Norco High, both perennial Southern Section powerhouses, are on the roster of an Arizona State team that will face USC on Saturday night at the Coliseum. Former Centennial linebackers Vontaze Burfict, Brandon Magee and Shelly Lyons, defensive linemen Will Sutton and Lee Adams and receiver Angelo Magee have been dubbed the "Corona Six-Pack.

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict says he'll skip his senior season and make himself eligible for the NFL draft. Burfict made the announcement Tuesday in a one-paragraph statement. He thanked his coaches and professors and added that he plans to return to school in the future to get his degree. The 6-foot-3 Burfict was the Sun Devils' second-leading tackler this season with 69, including seven for losses. He also had an interception and fumble recovery. But Burfict was supposed to be one of the Pac-12's most dominant defensive players this year and former coach Dennis Erickson described the linebacker's season as "average.

UCLA plays Arizona State this week, and that comes with one all-important chore — figuring out where Vontaze Burfict is and what he is up to. The Sun Devils' highly volatile linebacker comes with everything — speed, strength, instincts and a warning label. "We've got to be disciplined out there, for sure," Bruins quarterback Kevin Prince said. "He tends to definitely do some things to try to provoke the opponent. " Burfict, a junior, has an effect on the field that extends beyond his play at times.

In 1970, an imposing photo of Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated next to the headline "The Most Feared Man in the Game. " Rarely has any player been so good, so tough, so mean, so short-tempered and so violent that he draws comparisons to Butkus, who once told a television reporter, "I sometimes have a dream where I hit a man so hard his head pops off and rolls downfield. " But rare is a player like Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who just might be the most feared man in college football.
