For 50 years, Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena was known for its oversized store and huge inventory. So when book superstores such as Barnes & Noble and Borders Books & Music started to multiply, Vroman's owner Joel Sheldon decided to maintain his edge by expanding and adding a coffee bar. Sheldon was interviewed by Karen Kaplan. This bookstore was founded in 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman, who was my grandfather's godfather. When he died, he had no heirs, so he left the store to my great-uncle.

Vroman's has always supported freedom of speech and believed that as a community, Pasadena would not turn Howard Stern away because of his comments or beliefs. Because of their vast experience with crowd control, we also believed that our Pasadena police were more than able to handle the large number of people anticipated at the event. In both instances, our assumptions were correct. Vroman's assumed the costs of security and cleanup and other expenses related to this event. Every effort was made to see that the security was adequate and that litter was removed promptly.

MUSIC Adele "I'll Be Waiting" is a neo-soul sashay, and it inspires the singer to push her vocal expressions into sweet howls reminiscent of those by Dusty Springfield, another Brit deeply influenced by American country and soul. Overall, her album "21" shows that Adele, now 23, is towering in the same landscape where some of her contemporaries, beehived or not, have lost all their bearings. Greek Theatre, 2700 N. Vermont Ave., L.A. 7:30 p.m. $32.50-$65. Greektheatrela.com.
