Alex O'Brien of Stanford became the first man since 1974 to win the singles and doubles championships, taking both titles in straight sets Sunday at the NCAA men's tennis tournament in Athens, Ga. A senior from Amarillo, Tex., O'Brien defeated poor-serving and error-prone Wade McGuire of Georgia, 6-3, 6-2, and then joined with Chris Cocotos for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over teammates Vimal Patel and Jason Yee.

Davide Sanguinetti of UCLA continued his improbable run with two victories Friday to reach the semifinals of the NCAA men's tennis championships at Athens, Ga. Sanguinetti defeated Chuck Coleman of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, in the third round and Brian MacPhie of USC, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Sanguinetti will face fourth-seeded Wade McGuire of Georgia, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over David Ekerot of USC, in today's semifinals. McGuire, a finalist last year, has won 11 consecutive matches.

A strong serve gave Chris Woodruff a quick victory in the singles finals of the NCAA men's tennis championships Sunday at Athens, Ga. The top-seeded Tennessee sophomore opened the match with the first of his seven aces, put 72% of his first serves into play and never had his serve broken in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Wade McGuire of Georgia in 1 hour 12 minutes. "I kept him pinned back better than the last time we met," said Woodruff, referring to McGuire's 6-0, 6-2 victory April 24.

Jeff Belloli, a former Servite High standout, finished his collegiate tennis career Saturday when he and Chris Numbers of San Diego State lost a semifinal doubles match to second-seeded Chris Cocotos and Alex O'Brien of Stanford, 6-3, 6-3, in the NCAA men's tennis tournament at Athens, Ga. A doubles title was guaranteed for Stanford when Vimal Patel and Jason Yee defeated Tony Bujan and Luis Ruette of Texas Christian, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the other semifinal.

USC reached the finals of the NCAA men's tennis championship for the second time in three years with a 5-0 victory over Texas, and Georgia swept the three doubles matches to upset UCLA, 5-4, in semifinal matches Monday at Athens, Ga. In posting their second consecutive shutout, the top-seeded Trojans did not lose a set in the five completed matches against the Longhorns, getting victories from Brian MacPhie, Wayne Black, Jon Leach, Andras Lanyi and Adam Peterson.

Steve Bono, the San Francisco 49ers' backup quarterback, was released Friday in a move aimed at giving the team more room under the salary cap. Bono would have earned $1.55 million next season as Steve Young's backup. With the 49ers bumping up against the $34.6-million cap before signing any of the eight players drafted last week, the team has been looking to cut its payroll.
