JANESVILLE, Wis. -- Four years ago, it might have sounded preposterous that Wisconsin, a state that preferred Barack Obama to John McCain by 14 points, would become a wellspring of successful GOP candidates and leaders. But the impossible has happened. The state features three prominent speakers during the GOP convention -- RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, Gov. Scott Walker and vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, who hopes to wow the nation with a speech Wednesday night. In 2008, the state's two U.S. senators were from the Democratic Party.

Matt Barkley's blind side might have taken a big step toward stability Thursday with the return of 6-foot-6, 300-pound Aundrey Walker to practice. Walker, a sophomore left tackle aiming to succeed first-round NFL draft pick Matt Kalil, had been sidelined for most of training camp because of injuries. Freshman Max Tuerk and walk-on Nathan Guertler had worked in his spot. Walker, his right wrist wrapped for a no-pads practice, flashed the nimble, strong skills that Coach Lane Kiffin hopes will provide Heisman Trophy candidate Barkley quality passing time.

USC moves into the second week of training camp Monday still searching for answers on several fronts, none as important as left tackle. Coach Lane Kiffin installed sophomore Aundrey Walker as quarterback Matt Barkley's blind-side protector during spring practice, but the 6-foot-6, 300-pound sophomore was sidelined again Sunday because of injuries. With less than three weeks before the Sept. 1 opener against Hawaii, redshirt sophomore Nathan Guertler, a 6-5, 270-pound walk-on from Norco, has taken most of the first-team reps in Walker's place.

The pitch throughout UCLA's practice Monday was simple: When the Bruins get to Houston, they don't want to have a problem. Players knew training camp at Cal State San Bernardino was going to be hot. Some joked the first two days of training camp about it not being as bad as their hometowns in Arizona, Hawaii, Maryland, central California. Then came Monday. The first day in shoulder pads. The first day of triple-digit heat. The sales pitch from Coach Jim Mora was that this was going to get the Bruins ready for their season opener at Rice Aug. 30. The price?

His popularity among GOP true believers was so great that he upstaged Mitt Romney when Walker and the Republican presidential hopeful spoke in late March at the same party dinner a few nights before the Wisconsin primary. So the Romney campaign knew better than to let Walker do it again Monday at a Romney rally here in a sweltering textile mill. The solution: Have the two introduced simultaneously, letting Romney bask in the Walker-style whoops and cheers that he sometimes has trouble drawing on his own. The task fell to Dan Sinykin, chief executive of Monterey Mills, a maker of fabric for paint rollers and stuffed animals.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, triumphant in Tuesday's recall election, offered advice to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney during an appearance on “Face the Nation” Sunday. “Gov. Romney has a shot if the 'R' doesn't stand for Republican, but reformer,” Walker said, touting his role in changing Wisconsin's policy toward public worker unions and government spending. “I don't think we win if it's just a referendum on Barack Obama. I think people like Paul Ryan and others hope that he [Romney]
