Seconds before showtime, the DJ took his place before the bank of monitors, switches and dials. He took a deep breath, a light flickered on above the door. Waffles was on the air. "It's the best in rock!" he said into the mike. "Let's start things off right!" With that, he kicked off a rollicking two hours on Mt. Rock Radio, the student-run station at Mt. San Antonio College. Howling guitars and heart-pounding percussion pulsed through the airwaves. The spiky-haired host, zinging with frenetic energy, drummed his fingers to the beat and sang along as he worked the boards and set up the playlist — Thin Lizzy, Joan Jett, the Ramones.

Authorities on Saturday identified two men killed in a workplace shooting at a Southern California Edison office in Irwindale, as well as the gunman, who investigators said was a co-worker. Robert Scott Lindsay, 53, of Chino Hills and Henry Serrano, 56, of Walnut were killed Friday when Andre Turner, 48, of Norco opened fire in the office with a semiautomatic handgun, then took his own life. Two others, Angela Alvarez, 46, of Glendale, an Edison employee, and Abhay Pimpale, 38, of Montebello, a contract worker, were wounded and in critical condition.

Thanksgiving dinner is an exercise in overkill. There are so many dishes, so much food, so many different flavors, so much richness. Getting off to the right start is important. What could be better than this light, crisp, slightly sweet and spicy salad from Russ Parsons that's based on the best of California's fall flavors: persimmons, walnuts and pomegranates? Even better, this dish is so simple to put together that you can safely hand it off to whoever's standing around the kitchen looking for something to do. It really is almost impossible to mess up. The one exception: It does have to be made within a couple of hours of serving or the cut persimmons will darken.

Occasionally they would knock on a neighbor's door to borrow tools or ask for help with a maintenance issue. But for the most part, the Buddhist nuns on Marcon Drive in Walnut kept to the ranch-style house where they lived and worshiped. For 10 years, the young women with the shaved heads and long robes were accepted as part of an eclectic neighborhood of single-family homes, a middle school, a spacious public park and four churches — one Mormon, one Lutheran and two catering to Korean American Christians.
