A man seen knocking on doors and climbing a fence in the Marble Cove area was arrested because of the vigilance of a witness, police said Wednesday. Warren Marr, 20, of Huntington Beach was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and possession of narcotics, a police spokeswoman said. An unidentified witness telephoned police and reported seeing a person knocking on the front doors of homes after he had parked a motorcycle.

A Huntington Beach man, chased by officers after he reportedly snatched a 76-year-old woman's purse, jumped from a moving car and ran, police said, abandoning his girlfriend in the car. The chase began when the man grabbed the purse at Warner Avenue and Mount Eden Street in Fountain Valley and got into a stolen car, police said. He then led police on a chase for a mile through congested traffic until he suddenly jumped and ran, leaving the young woman in the rolling vehicle.

More than a century ago, Sengbe Pieh led slaves aboard the Amistad in a revolt in which they overthrew their captors in an effort to return to their homeland. From some angles they could even be futuristic city skylines, or pieces of modern art, or -- perish the thought -- hulking mounds of guano. Whatever they might suggest, the strange tufa formations of Mono Lake are one of California's most irresistible sights for photographers.
