Missy Franklin won five medals at the London Summer Olympics, proving that she's one of the top swimmers in the world. This may be just as impressive. After a recent high school swim meet, the 17-year-old balanced a water bottle on her forehead as she swam the backstroke. It's an exercise that helps with head stabilization. The water bottle sat still on her head the entire length of the pool. #GOPResponse #SOTU #gop #tcot twitter.com/marcorubio/sta… - Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) February 13, 2013 SAN FRANCISCO -- Twitter runneth over with jokes at the expense of the parched Sen. Marco Rubio who awkwardly broke away to take a desperate sip of water toward the end of his Republican rebuttal to the president's State of the Union speech. Soon the topic was trending on Twitter and hashtags #waterbreak and #watergate threatened to eclipse the "binders full of women" remark from Mitt Romney that lit up Twitter after his presidential debate (and, ahem, water down any serious discussion of the GOP vision to help the middle class that Rubio was trying to outline at the time)

WASHINGTON -- Marco Rubio may have been aiming to take charge as the GOP's messenger Tuesday night, but it was his thirst, not his words, that ultimately has driven the narrative about his State of the Union response. The Florida senator, following President Obama's annual address, spoke at length on the contrast between Republican and Democratic visions, accusing Obama of burdening the American people, and the American dream, with unnecessary government action . But it was Rubio's decision to reach off-screen for a small water bottle, anxiously looking at the camera as he took a swig and resumed his address, that captivated the immediate response to the speech.

Cleveland's LeBron James has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for kicking a water bottle during the Cavaliers' victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The NBA says James kicked a water bottle with 12.4 seconds left in the first quarter of the Cavaliers' 109-95 win Wednesday night. Last year's league most valuable player, James was rested for the entire fourth quarter as Cleveland protected a big lead. He finished with 12 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in 31 minutes. San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker is expected to sit out several games because of a mild left ankle sprain.

Members of the Animal Regulation Commission usually join the panel because they're passionate about animals. But that passion sometimes makes them act like, well, animals. A case in point occurred Monday when Commissioner Gini Barrett, upset at comments made by fellow Commissioner Russ Cook, shouted an obscenity across the room and then launched an empty water bottle at him.

Standing in line outside Staples Center with my 13-year-old daughter about 90 minutes before the recent Britney Spears concert, the security phalanx appeared formidable. Men in suits were everywhere, barking into walkie-talkies, holstered weaponry at the ready. Airport-style metal detectors loomed at the arena entrance, where scowling men holding scanning wands outnumbered the staffers taking tickets. We surely have become a different country in this post-Sept. 11 world.

Take a look at the most popular endurance sport drinks and you'll notice a surprising similarity in ingredients. There are carbohydrates (usually in the form of sugar), sodium, potassium and sometimes a touch of protein. You'll notice something else - these drinks are expensive. It can cost $1.75 or more to fill one 24-ounce water bottle - and you have to drink a bottle an hour to keep up a good flow of nutrients and liquid while you work out. There's an easy way around the expense: making your own endurance drink.

The health-conscious Californians who drink bottled water seemingly by the barrel are unwittingly contributing to an avalanche of wasted plastic that is clogging up landfills and contributing to air pollution, according to state officials. In response, the California Department of Conservation is launching an awareness campaign this week aimed at coaxing consumers through public service messages to recycle the bottles instead of putting them in the trash.

Forget the cell phone, the beeper and the computerized Rolodex. Forget the Filofax, the Discman and the camcorder. To be called a true Angeleno, you need only one accessory, and it's pretty low-tech: a bottle of water. Look around--practically every other person you see is lugging a plastic receptacle filled with H2O.

If you didn't know the Transportation Security Administration might screen your Starbucks or water bottle for explosives even after you have passed through airport security, you just haven't been paying attention. That's the word from the TSA after a YouTube video posted Monday said it showed passengers opening a coffee cup and a water bottle for safety screening at an airport gate in Columbus, Ohio. NBC picked up the story that the agency says just isn't news.

Your browser does not support iframes. Don't mess with a reporter doing a standup. It's a lesson Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus learned the hard way. Andrus decided to mess with Emily Jones of Fox Sports Southwest while she was doing a hit. He threw a towel on top of the camera while she was talking, completely blacking her out. Jones responded by squirting him with a spray water bottle. (Where the bottle came from, we do not know.) The guys in the broadcaster booth initially thought  that right fielder Nelson Cruz was the culprit but Jones took to Twitter to identify the true troublemaker.

Grand Canyon National Park, the 5-million or 6-million-year-old granddaddy of Arizona tourism, logged 4.3 million visitors last year. Rangers say that's a dip of 3.7% from the year before, but the canyon remains among the nation's most visited parks. And despite its age (also a ranger estimate), it does keep changing. Visitors to the South Rim - by far the park's most heavily trafficked area - will find six recently installed water-bottle refilling stations near major trail heads.
