Journalist Michael Hastings was living in Los Angeles and reporting on national security issues and the entertainment industry when he died early Tuesday in a car crash in the city, according to his employer. Hastings, a hard-charging reporter whose 2010 profile led to the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal , was killed in a Los Angeles car crash, according to a statement by BuzzFeed. The 33-year-old Hastings was writing for BuzzFeed and joined the organization's Los Angeles bureau after it opened in October.

The developer of a controversial skyscraper project in the heart of Hollywood agreed Tuesday to trim the height of two residential towers by 25%, and the proposal was approved by a Los Angeles City Council committee Residents complained, however, that the reduction still does not address traffic concerns. Millennium Partners offered shorter, bulkier structures to frame the iconic Capitol Records building on opposite sides of Vine Street.

Firefighters were battling a brush fire Tuesday afternoon in Ventura County that had burned about 20 acres. About 75 firefighters were on the ground or en route to the Condor fire, which broke out shortly before 4 p.m. east of Fillmore near Highway 126, the Ventura County Fire Department said. One helicopter from the Los Angeles County Fire Department was attacking the blaze from the air, and another helicopter and four air tankers were responding. "It's in very steep, rugged terrain," Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Bill Nash told The Times.

The day before Michelle Kane was slain, Los Angeles police officers took two reports from her regarding her estranged husband, officials said. In the first report, concerning a violation of a temporary restraining order, officers documented "everything that occurred, including taking tape-recorded statements," LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. As part of that first interview with police, Michelle Kane provided officers with a tape recording of hers and reported an incident that she said took place Thursday outside the Topanga Area station, in which her estranged husband, Michael Kane, made verbal threats toward her as they were involved in a prearranged custody exchange.

State officials are investigating the death of an Ontario dairy worker crushed while moving cattle over the weekend. Winston Perez, 28, suffered severe internal injuries after he was "crushed between a gate and the fence by the cows" about 5 a.m. Saturday at Dick Dykstra Dairy, coroner's and state officials said. The Riverside man underwent surgery at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, but died in the intensive care later that day. Cal/OSHA spokesman Peter Melton noted state officials had no record of safety violations at the dairy.

A 46-year-old man remains on the loose after police say he chased down his estranged wife and stabbed her to death on a residential street in West Hills over the weekend. Police said Michael Rodney Kane forced his way into a home where his estranged wife, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, was staying, then chased her down the street and killed her Saturday morning. After scuffling with the homeowner and cutting the man's hand with a knife, Kane allegedly stabbed his estranged wife multiple times about 7:50 a.m. before she collapsed in the street, police said.

A 46-year-old man who police say chased down his estranged wife and stabbed her to death in the middle of a residential neighborhood was arrested early Monday morning in San Bernardino County. Michael Rodney Kane forced his way into a West Hills Home on Saturday morning where his wife, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, was staying. He then chased her down the street and killed her, police said. He later fled the scene. LAPD homicide detective Dave Peteque told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that the search moved to San Bernardino County after sheriff's deputies there found Kane's abandoned vehicle.

Two adults were reported dead in a crash between a motorcycle and vehicle in Long Beach early Monday morning, officials said. A 30-year-old male and a 60-year-old female were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol's Southern Division. The incident was reported at the intersection of Norwalk Boulevard and Wardlow Road at 6:10 a.m., Officer Monica Posada said. Authorities said it was unclear in which vehicles the two dead had been riding. The intersection remains closed for investigation, she said.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" actor and comedian Jeff Garlin was arrested over the weekend in the alleged smashing of another motorist's windows during a fight over a parking space, LAPD officials said. The 51-year-old actor was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism Saturday afternoon after the parking-space spat allegedly turned violent in Studio City. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department records show Garlin is out on $20,000 bail. He has an initial court appearance scheduled for July 11. Garlin plays the manager of "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David on the successful HBO show.

Los Angeles police officials said Monday they did what they could to protect a woman who investigators said was hunted down by her estranged husband at a friend's home and stabbed to death on a quiet West Hills street. Officers with the Topanga Area station took two reports five hours apart in which the victim, Michelle Ann Kane, 43, said Michael Rodney Kane had broken the law, first by violating a temporary restraining order and then by vandalizing her home, police officials said.
