Patricia S. Warren has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer for the Western division of Cigna Healthplans of California, Glendale. Warren replaces David S. Weigley, who has resigned.

Pacific and New Mexico State are the Big West Conference men's basketball coaches' preseason favorites to win their divisions. Pacific, which returns four starters, got seven first-place votes to finish first in the Western Division. Long Beach State, the defending conference champion, received five votes. In the Eastern Division, New Mexico State got seven first-place votes to Utah State's five. The conference is divided into divisions beginning this season.

The Rams taught us that qualifying for the NFL playoffs as an 11-5 division champion can bring a team more criticism than going 9-7 and making it as a wild card.

The first phase of the Playa Vista development, between Marina del Rey and Los Angeles International Airport, is in the planning stages by Howard Hughes Properties. McCarthy/Pacific of Newport Beach, western division of McCarthy, will provide construction management services. Preparatory work on Playa Vista, believed to be "the largest and most valuable undeveloped urban land parcel in the country," has been initiated with the stockpiling of fill dirt for the project.
