Bernabe Simon scored 19 points and Chris Massie had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Oxnard College past Moorpark, 79-74, in a Western State Conference Northern Division men's basketball opener Saturday night at Moorpark. It was Oxnard's first division victory since the 1996-97 season. "This was a big game for us in a lot of ways," Coach Ron McClurkin said. "We've gone 0-8 in [the division] the last two [seasons] and we hadn't played a game since Dec. 29. I wasn't sure how we'd perform."

Eight days before the Western State Conference track and field championships, Chrystall DeNaeyer of Moorpark College threw out her back teaching a child to roller skate. Rather than running away from the pain, the 25-year-old sophomore ran wild on Saturday, winning two individual events and anchoring both winning relay teams. Her performance helped the Raiders run away with the conference title at La Playa Stadium at Santa Barbara City College.

A Ventura College basketball player filed suit against the community college district Wednesday, claiming that he had no opportunity to defend himself when he was declared ineligible to play last season. Guard Sean Van Gundy and two other players who filed similar Ventura County Superior Court lawsuits claim that their reputations were ruined after the Western State Conference would not allow them to play during the 1997-98 season because they allegedly received meal subsidies the prior season.

Familiarity figures to breed solid defense this season for the Oxnard College baseball team, particularly around the horn. Oxnard's infield--Brent Egan at third base, Jack Wilson at shortstop, Matt Pesso at second, and Matt Pitstick and Jess Sanchez alternating at first--unquestionably is the team's strength and among the best in Southern California. It's also a study in chemistry. "This is the most interesting team I've ever been on," Wilson said.
