The Los Angeles County coroner has identified two people killed in a plane crash last month in the Santa Monica Mountains near Calabasas. Cheryl Jolene Strawn, 69, and Christopher James Wade, 63, died April 29 after the Cessna they were in collided with another aircraft and then crashed. The crash sparked a small brush fire, which charred about an acre in the parched area. The blaze was quickly extinguished, fire officials said.  Strawn was a production designer on the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies, according to a Facebook page dedicated to the series.

A plane crash in the Santa Monica Mountains on Monday afternoon may be connected to an incident in which a small plane made a forced landing in Westlake Village about the same time, authorities said. The crash of the plane in rugged terrain near Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road occurred shortly after 2 p.m., about the time that a fixed-wing Cessna 172 RG landed on its belly at the Westlake Golf Course, according to officials. "It appears that the two incidents may be connected," Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Times.

A small plane made an emergency landing at the Westlake Golf Course on Monday afternoon, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to three people, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said. The Cessna made a belly landing at 2:15 p.m. near the third hole of the golf course. County fire officials and witnesses said the landing gear was still up. One person complained of back pain and was taken to a hospital. Aaron Jesse, 47, said he and some friends left work early Monday to fit in an afternoon round of golf when the small plane came in silently and hit the ground with a thud.

Firefighters were searching for victims Monday afternoon in rugged terrain in the Santa Monica Mountains after a plane crashed in the area. The crash, which followed a forced landing of a separate aircraft  in Westlake Village earlier Monday, sparked a small brush fire as a Los Angeles County Fire Department camp crew scoured the area near Mulholland Drive and Las Virgenes Road, officials said. "We're making a search-and-rescue effort right now to determine if there are any survivors," Inspector Quvondo Johnson told The Times.

The body of a pilot who died in a plane crash after a midair collision has been found in the mangled wreckage of his aircraft, authorities said Monday night. The plane plummeted into a rugged area of the Santa Monica Mountains after colliding moments earlier with another aircraft, which belly-landed about five miles away on a golf course in Westlake Village, authorities said.  As rescuers scoured the crash site near Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road, they found the body in the wreckage of the fixed-wing Cessna 172, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Times.  He said the plane appeared to have hurtled into the ground nose first, creating a small crater.

Major baby-food makers such as Dole Food Co., Del Monte Foods Co. and Nestle's Gerber business are going to court Monday to determine whether they need to warn consumers of certain lead levels in their products. In a 2011 lawsuit, the Environmental Law Foundation alleged that some of the companies' foods and juices -- which included ingredients such as carrots, peaches, pears and sweet potatoes -- contained enough lead to warrant a consumer caution label under California's Proposition 65 toxins warning law. A non-jury trial in the case is set to begin Monday in state Superior Court in Oakland.

Westlake Village, 38 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, seems farther. It straddles the Ventura County line, its golf courses, man-made lakes and gated estates sprinkled among gentle hills. Some weekend visitors golf. Some loll in the spa at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village or chase immortality at the California Health & Longevity Institute. (David Murdock, the soon-to-be-90 founder of Dole Foods, owns the hotel and institute.) It's a good place to lie low. My wife, daughter and I spent $142 on lodging (one night, including tax)
