Cal State Northridge, the fifth-ranked team in the NCAA Division II poll, will play host to Westmont College in a nonconference soccer match at 7:30 tonight at North Campus Stadium. Northridge (3-0-1) defeated Southern California College, 4-0, Friday, and Westmont (5-0-2) won the Sunbird Classic tournament at Fresno Pacific on Saturday, defeating Simon Fraser (Canada), 2-1, in the final. Westmont, the second-ranked team in the National Assn.

Westmont College defeated The Master's, 85-65, in an NAIA District III season opener for both teams Saturday at Westmont. The score was tied, 26-26, with five minutes left in the first half when Westmont went on a 16-6 run to take a 42-32 lead at the half. Westmont connected on 22 of 27 free throws while Master's made only 12 of 23. Rocky Shipes scored a team-high 21 points for Master's and Phil Hahn contributed 17.

Westmont College will spend $400,000 over three years to boost minority enrollment and broaden curriculum on cross-cultural and global issues. The Campus Diversity Program will make the evangelical Christian college "a place that is hospitable to ethnic minorities," Provost Shirley Mullen said. Of 1,238 students, about 85% are white and 15% are members of minorities.

Southern California College men's basketball team will play host to Westmont College at 7:30 tonight in a battle for first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference in Costa Mesa. Both teams are 7-3 in the conference and feature several former Orange County prep players. Westmont (16-8) is led by 6-foot 6-inch forward Mike Kelly, a former Mater Dei High School star who is averaging 15.2 points per game.

Loyola Marymount University's basketball team, coming off a tough loss at St. John's, should find the going easier when the Lions open at home at 7:30 tonight against Westmont College of Santa Barbara, a member of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Lions are 1-1 after opening in the Lapchick Tournament at St. John's, where they easily defeated Tennessee Tech but lost to the Redmen, 88-85. Westmont (2-1) has defeated The Master's and Sonoma State, and lost to Biola.

Westmont College's men's basketball team overcame a nine-point deficit with 3 1/2 minutes remaining to defeat Southern California College, 82-72, Saturday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Santa Barbara. Westmont made four three-point shots to cut Southern California's lead. Brian Holt's three-point shot with 1:32 remaining gave Westmont a 72-70 lead. Southern California led at halftime, 38-29. Holt led Westmont with 17 points.

Southern California College increased its winning streak to 4 games Tuesday night by beating Westmont College, 71-69, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at SCC. But it took a play by John Mounce with time running out to save the game for SCC. The Vanguards (14-2 overall, 3-0 in conference play) led, 69-59, with 6 minutes left. SCC, out of team fouls, helped Westmont get back into the game as the Warriors made 6 free throws in a 3-minute stretch to cut the lead to, 69-65.

Westmont College ended Southern California College's 19-game home winning streak with an 80-57 victory in a Golden State Athletic Conference men's basketball game Tuesday at SCC. The Vanguards (16-4, 4-2 in the conference) last lost at home Dec. 6, 1989, to Christian Heritage. Chad Kammerer scored 22 points, making six of nine three-point shots, for Westmont (12-6, 3-1). Jeff Bickmore, who entered the game averaging 20 points, scored eight and Mike Henjum had 14 for the Vanguards.

For Westmont College, it was the perfect time for a visit from a long lost relative. After a listless first half, Westmont gained the momentum by scoring twice in a six-minute span Saturday, fueling a 2-0 victory over The Master's in the championship soccer match of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics' Far West Regional.
