In a city that does nothing but complain about its Police Department, I'd like to offer my sincere appreciation to the LAPD for the capture of the Westside rapist suspect (April 14). If our judicial system showed the same competence, we'd have a trial by the end of the week and a lethal injection by the end of the month. RICH SIEGEL Culver City

A former insurance claims adjuster who was suspected of terrorizing women in the 1970s as the Westside Rapist has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for seven murders that were committed in two waves of killings and sexual assaults. John Floyd Thomas Jr., 74, sat with his hands manacled to a waist chain and used sheets of paper to shield his face from a photographer as he was sentenced for the killings that took place in a swath stretching from Inglewood to Claremont.

Twenty-six years ago, police discovered the partially nude body of 85-year-old Isabel Askew in a vineyard near Ontario International Airport. She had been reported missing from her Claremont apartment more than a week earlier. The cause of death could not be determined because of the condition of her body. But three years later, her daughter, Adrian Askew, was found strangled in the same West Bonita Avenue apartment where she had lived with her mother. The 56-year-old retired school crossing guard was found lying face-up with bedding pulled over her head and she had been sexually assaulted.

After writing letters telling his seven victims that he had raped them because he felt unloved and rejected, the man who terrorized the Westside for five months was sent to prison Thursday for 50 years to life. Jelani Efron King, 22, known as the Westside Rapist, pleaded no contest on Oct. 5 to seven counts of rape. The plea came in exchange for Thursday's sentence. Because King is required by law to serve 85% of his sentence, he won't be eligible for his first parole hearing until he is 64.

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man they believe is the so-called Westside Rapist responsible for a string of sexual assaults in Palms, Santa Monica and Venice neighborhoods, officials said Tuesday. Jelani Efron King of Los Angeles was taken into custody about 7 p.m. Monday by a multi-agency task force headed by the Los Angeles Police Department.
