In its first board of directors meeting since emerging from a protracted bankruptcy, Tribune Co. named investor Bruce Karsh as chairman and veteran entertainment executive Peter Liguori as chief executive. Eddy Hartenstein, who served as chief executive for almost two years, remained on the board and will continue as publisher and chief executive of the Los Angeles Times, the largest of eight daily Tribune newspapers. He also will act as special advisor to Liguori. Karsh is president of Oaktree Capital Management, the private equity firm that now owns 23%, the biggest single stake, in Tribune.

Tribune Co. has tapped Dana Zimmer at Comcast's NBCUniversal unit to be its president of distribution. Zimmer will oversee relationships between Tribune's television properties and pay-TV distributors including cable operators and satellite broadcasters. Tribune, the parent of the Los Angeles Times, owns 23 television stations including KTLA-TV Los Angeles and the national cable network WGN America. At NBCUniversal, Zimmer had been executive vice president of TV Networks distribution since 2011.

In an effort to kick-start original television production, Tribune Co. has hired Matt Cherniss, a former Fox and Warner Bros. executive, as president of WGN America and head of a newly formed Tribune Studios.   Cherniss will be responsible for strategy and day-to-day operations at both properties. He will spearhead efforts to create original content for Tribune's 23 television stations as well as cable channel WGN America. Tribune is seeking to establish a beachhead in Hollywood.

Tribune Co. named Ed Wilson chief revenue officer, responsible for increasing sales at all of the company's divisions, including newspapers, television and online. Last week, Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors. The Chicago company, which owns the Los Angeles Times and KTLA-TV Channel 5, is struggling amid a dramatic downturn in advertising spending and a debt of $12.9 billion, much of it accumulated nearly a year ago when real estate mogul Sam Zell took the company private.

Tribune Co. television stations, including KTLA-TV Channel 5 in Los Angeles, are coming back to satellite broadcaster DirecTV. After a very public feud, DirecTV reached a five-year agreement late Wednesday to pay Tribune to carry its 23 local television stations around the country and its national cable channel WGN America. With more than 19 million subscribers, DirecTV is the second-largest pay-TV operator, behind Comcast Corp. It has a market share of around 20% in Los Angeles.
