To his family he is John Smith, but in high school football circles he's known as "Juju" - and the Long Beach Poly senior is every bit as colorful as his nickname. On Friday night, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound five-star recruit showed why Scout.com rates him the No. 1 prep safety in the nation, using all of his skills to play a major role in the Jackrabbits' 28-15 season-opening victory over Crenshaw at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. UCLA has a deeper receiving corps than it has had in more than a decade, and the competition for spots should reach a frenzy this week. Eric Yarber, who coaches the position, said he will rotate four outside and inside receivers during games. All Yarber will say is that “there are a lot of guys fighting for jobs.” But there seem to be a few givens. Shaquelle Evans, Jordan Payton and Devin Lucien appear to be locks on the outside, as are Darius Bell and Devin Fuller on the inside.

UCLA's first practice with full contact was edgy. Coach Jim Mora ended practice early after an altercation involving wide receiver Devin Lucien escalated, ending with receiver Shaquelle Evans and defensive back Anthony Jefferson needing to be separated. Mora had the team run for 10 minutes, chewed out those involved in the altercation and lectured the team. He ordered players to huddle and left the field with most of his staff. Mora returned later to address the situation with the media.

USC star receiver Marqise Lee sat out practice Saturday, but the Trojans breathed a major sigh of relief. Coach Lane Kiffin said the junior had suffered a bone bruise on Friday, a condition that qualified as good news for USC. Lee, the Biletnikoff Award winner as college football's top receiver, was injured Friday after he caught a long pass and appeared to land on his right shoulder after a defender made contact. He was escorted from the practice field by athletic trainers, and carted from the practice facility with his arm in a sling, leaving the Trojans to wonder whether they had lost their most high-profile player.

USC said Tuesday that receiver Marqise Lee did not break NCAA rules last January when he signed autographs in Florida that have been offered for sale. Lee, who won the Biletnikoff Award, attended the Bowl Championship Series title game, where the Orange Bowl Committee honored national award winners. The NCAA reportedly is investigating whether Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel , the Heisman Trophy winner, received payment for autographs he signed while in Miami. Dave Roberts , USC's vice president for athletic compliance, said in a statement that the university had "received an inquiry that floated Marqise Lee's name and the autograph signing situation in Miami that has been in the news lately.

The Philadelphia Eagles excused Riley Cooper from all team activities Friday as the wide receiver dealt with the repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur. Cooper has been sent away from the team to get help with his issues, something upon which the player and the team agreed. Coach Chip Kelly made it clear after Friday's practice, however, that Cooper would be back with the team when he's ready. "There has never been any question of cutting Riley," Kelly said. Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult, and he will seek counseling.
