Mario wants to be king of the living room. Video game giant Nintendo Co. on Thursday will launch a software update for its new Wii U console -- the first step in the company's attempt to become the hub for all video watching whether it's airing live, recorded on a DVR or streaming online. After years of marketing the original Wii as a simple-to-use video game device whose only video option was Netflix streaming, Nintendo is using the Wii U, which launched in November, to challenge giants including Microsoft, Sony, Apple and most cable companies that are seeking to dominate the same turf.

Sony sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 units during the crucial Thanksgiving week, the Japanese electronics giant said Friday. That's fewer than the 750,000 Xbox 360s that Microsoft sold the week of Thanksgiving, but it beat Nintendo's Wii U and its Wii, which sold 400,000 and 300,000 units that week, respectively. Sony said total sales of PlayStation hardware, games and peripherals were up 9% from Thanksgiving week 2011. The company said it also sold 160,000 of its portable PS Vita devices, whose sales have been struggling.

The Xbox 360 not only outsold Nintendo 's new Wii U during Thanksgiving week, but also outsold the Wii U and the original Wii combined. Microsoft's video game console, which has been No. 1 in the U.S. since 2010, sold 750,000 units last week, the company said. Nintendo, by contrast, sold 400,000 Wii U's, a figure that was in part constrained by limited supply. The Japanese gaming giant also sold 300,000 units of the original Wii, which debuted in 2006. The Xbox 360 has climbed to the top of the sales charts and stayed there through a combination of must-have titles for hard-core gamers, such as the recently released "Halo 4," and digital entertainment options for a general audience, including streaming movies, television shows and music.

Nintendo's plans to make its Wii U a new way to watch TV and movies are on hold, at least for a few weeks. After previously saying the features would be available when the new video game console goes on sale Sunday, Nintendo said Friday that the Wii U's video-on-demand and interactive TV options will come online later. The Japanese video game giant said the Wii U's ability to interface with popular Internet VOD services such as Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu Plus will launch in "the coming weeks.
