Los Angeles County supervisors unanimously approved a plan Tuesday to relocate the few remaining residents of the blighted Ujima Village subsidized housing complex in Willowbrook within 90 days, but they turned down housing officials' appeal for eviction powers. Citing contamination concerns, county housing officials had urged supervisors to give them the authority to evict those reluctant to leave.

Two men were arrested early Saturday after a gun battle with sheriff's deputies in the 2200 block of 121st Street, authorities said. Deputies tried to stop a speeding car driven by Theodore Millander, 23, about 12:30 a.m. Millander refused to stop and fired shots at the officers, said Deputy Luis Castro. People at a nearby house party also opened fire on the deputies. Millander stopped the car and ran away while exchanging fire with a deputy, Castro said.

A day after two young brothers drowned in a fishing pond at a Willowbrook park, lifeguards were on duty to monitor Memorial Day crowds at the county-run facility, but officials had not yet decided whether the patrols would remain beyond the holiday weekend. A bouquet of roses and carnations drifted across the lake at Earvin "Magic" Johnson Park where Mario Gutierrez, 12, and his 10-year-old brother, Rolando, drowned Sunday after a baby sitter dropped them off to play at the crowded park.

Two young brothers dropped off by a baby-sitter to play at a crowded Willowbrook park drowned Sunday after they ventured into a clay-bottom fishing pond not intended for swimming. Sheriff's and county dive teams searched the bottom of the man-made lake at Earvin "Magic" Johnson Park for nearly two hours before finding the bodies of Mario Gutierrez, 12, and his 10-year-old brother, Rolando, lying six feet apart. The boys were in water that was about 10 feet deep, authorities said.
