Jeffrey Stenroos, the Los Angeles school police officer accused of staging his own shooting, was found guilty Monday of the hoax that triggered a massive and costly manhunt. L.A. County Superior Court Judge Richard N. Kirschner convicted Stenroos, 31, of several felonies and a misdemeanor charge in the non-jury trial, including planting false evidence, insurance fraud and workers' compensation fraud. Stenroos, who had been free on bail, was taken into custody immediately after Kirschner announced his verdict.

Repeating last year's win, El Camino Real High School of Woodland Hills swept the Los Angeles Unified School District's Academic Decathlon on Tuesday and advanced to the state contest, renewing hope for another stab at the national title that eluded the team last year. Powerhouse El Camino Real High School clinched the National Academic Decathlon title here Saturday, marking its record-setting sixth U.S. victory. The Woodland Hills school's triumph was no accident. The team had been preparing for eight intense months with a level of detail that was evident even in their luggage. When they arrived at the championship in Omaha last week, the coaches' suitcases were stuffed with supplies for every conceivable emergency — stain sticks, lint rollers, painkillers and pantyhose, three shades of nail polish and neckties in eight colors.

The library at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills feels a bit like UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, so numerous are the championship banners hanging from the rafters. Now the librarians will need to find room for one more. El Camino won the National Academic Decathlon for a record-tying fifth time Saturday, defeating teams from Illinois and Wisconsin that had hoped to crack Southern California's near-lock on success in the event.

The penthouse of El Camino Real High School looks more like the aftermath of an all-night party than headquarters for a teenage brain trust. Sleeping bags are piled in one corner and the games Trivial Pursuit and Balderdash sit on the kitchen counter. Open bags of potato and tortilla chips spill out of the cabinets.
