The library at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills feels a bit like UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, so numerous are the championship banners hanging from the rafters. Now the librarians will need to find room for one more. El Camino won the National Academic Decathlon for a record-tying fifth time Saturday, defeating teams from Illinois and Wisconsin that had hoped to crack Southern California's near-lock on success in the event.

El Camino Real High School won its third U.S. Academic Decathlon on Saturday, making the Woodland Hills school the second-winningest to ever compete in the event. The victory tied California with Texas as the state with the most national titles with 11. The team of eight seniors whooped, hugged and punched the air after learning they had narrowly beat Mountain View High School of Mesa, Ariz.

The penthouse of El Camino Real High School looks more like the aftermath of an all-night party than headquarters for a teenage brain trust. Sleeping bags are piled in one corner and the games Trivial Pursuit and Balderdash sit on the kitchen counter. Open bags of potato and tortilla chips spill out of the cabinets.

Eight teachers at Woodland High School just outside Sacramento are under investigation after allegations they shared a standardized state science test with students preparing to take the exam. The Woodland Joint Unified School District announced Wednesday that the teachers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the charges are investigated. "As a district, we are shocked, appalled and tremendously disappointed in the unethical conduct of a few employees," said Supt. Linda Weesner.

For the second year in a row Saturday, the nine-student squad from El Camino Real High School of Woodland Hills finished second in the national Academic Decathlon to a team of Texas teenagers. The Texas crew from James E. Taylor High School in suburban Houston not only swept the academic tournament, but set a new record with 52,260 points out of a possible 60,000. "We've never had a team hit 50,000 [points] before in nationals," said Frann Shermet, executive director of the event.
