Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer stirred up a hornet's nest with her company's announcement that it will soon ban telecommuting . By Yahoo's reckoning, you can't operate at the top of your game if you're working from home. "To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side," Jackie Reses, Yahoo's human resources chief, wrote in a memo to staffers. "That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices.

Yahoo Inc. on Thursday confirmed the departure of one of its top U.S. executives, Hilary Schneider, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the filing, Schneider, the company's executive vice president responsible for business partnerships and advertising sales in the Americas, will remain at the company for a transition period. Also leaving the company, Yahoo said, are David Ko, a senior vice president who oversees strategy for the company's media properties and its mobile device partnerships, and Jimmy Pitaro, vice president of media.

Yahoo Inc. will offer a "do not track" feature on all its websites by early summer that will allow consumers to opt out of targeted advertisements based on data collected about their online movements, the company said Thursday. The new feature has been in development since last year and will "provide a simple step for consumers to express their ad-targeting preferences to Yahoo," the company said. Most major Web browsers, including Mozilla's Firefox, Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer and Apple Inc.'s Safari have added a "do not track" button in the last year or so as privacy advocates and Washington policymakers have pushed to give consumers more power over their online data.

Yahoo Inc. will cease operating its online music subscription service and switch customers to RealNetworks Inc.'s Rhapsody service as part of a deal that calls for Yahoo to promote Rhapsody on its site. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Scott Moore, Yahoo's head of media, said the partnership would allow Yahoo to focus its energies more on free, ad-supported music and other media offerings. Subscribers to Yahoo Music Unlimited will be shifted to the Rhapsody service sometime in the first half of this year.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yahoo Inc. is in talks with France Telecom to buy a majority stake in Dailymotion, an online video site popular in Europe that has been scouting for a U.S. partner to take on Google Inc.'s YouTube. If completed, it would be Chief Executive Marissa Mayer's first major acquisition since taking over Yahoo last summer. Under the ownership structure being discussed, Yahoo could buy as much as 75% of Dailymotion with the possibility of buying the rest of the site at a later date, the Wall Street Journal reported . The deal would value Dailymotion at around $300 million.

On Marissa Mayer's first day as CEO, Yahoo announced its second-quarter earnings, reporting a 4.4% decline in profit compared with the same period last year. The Internet company attributed its poor results to restructuring costs of nearly $130 million, which dragged its profit down to nearly $227 million. Yahoo saw no change in its earnings per share, which remained at 18 cents, nor its revenue excluding fees paid to partners, which remained at $1.08 billion. However, the company did not meet analysts' expectations of $1.1 billion, according to Reuters . Yahoo's display-ad revenue increased 1% while search increased 4%, according to the company . Mayer did not participate in Yahoo's conference call with analysts Tuesday.

Yahoo Inc., owner of the second-most popular U.S. search engine, gained a greater share of Web searches in the country last month, according to researcher ComScore Inc. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo's share expanded to 20.5%, up from 20.2% in September, ComScore said. Google Inc. held the lead in October with 63.1%.
